Just a couple of questions; first I was wondering what the best choice for my first snake would be. Would a boa be a good start or should I start with something smaller? Also what would make a good substrate? Is it better to keep a snake in a tank or build an enclosure?

i agree with chu'si a corn is a perfect way to start. and those pictures are a prime example of a good setup for a corn. its a very naturalistic terrarium with all those fake plants!

boa contrictors can make great pets but if your looking for a smaller species, a ball python or a corn snake would be perfect. Both are relatively easy to care for. The only real problem with bp's is that they can have serious feeding problems mostly due to stress. Substrates such as aspen shavings and even newspaper are adequate. It is necessary to build an enclosure when you are dealing with a large snake. Most of the reason due to the pricey expense of large retail enclosures.

Thanks you guys! You have been alot of help. I think Im gonna go with both a ball and a boa. I belive in going big or go home lol. At any rate I kinda made up my mind and I want an albino to start with. Guy wants to trade me for a 4 foot boa thats super healthy.
