Welcome to sSnakeSs.com
It's nice to see another Alberta snake owner here. Where are you from? There are a few people who breed snakes around here and a lot more who sell them. I don't know about balls being bread around here though. There are some good breeders in BC and Ontario that I know of. Also, there are a few good show/sales here in Alberta a few times each year. Those are good places to get snakes because you can check it out before you buy it.
Shipping a snake is OK, especailly from someone who knows what they are doing. Some people will gaurentee that the animal will arrive alive. It's always risky this time of year in this part of the world though.
Snakes get mites from other snakes that have mites. Wild caught snakes stand a good chance of being infected with mites and/or other parasites. People or petstores that sell WC snakes have a chance that all the snakes they have could be infected. However, with proper precautions and cleaning. Mites can be prevented or eliminated.
Hope this helps.
I've also seen untreated substrate as a source of mites. Using something like Provent-a-mite or a similar product will get rid of mites.
