Well, I wasn't excited at all to see the first one and when I did see it, I wasn't blown away. It was very good, but not my favorite of all time. I'm going to see the second one on Saturday. I'm just not a huge fan of wizards and elves.

I hear ya. I found myself sitting there thinking, "I don't care if any of the characters die or not". But I was more impressed than I expected to be......

I gobbled up the books when I was a kid, so much so that 3 sets of paperbacks fell apart and I finally bought hardbound. I liked the first movie better than I thought, considering how many changes there were but I wasn't blown away either. My friend actually fell asleep!

I'm sure I'll go see The Two Towers, but I don't mind waiting until the lines aren't so long.

We're going to go see it over Christmas break - but I do admit that so far the books have been much better.

I like LOTR about as much as I like snakes. I bought tickets to Two Towers, three weeks ago so that I could see it right when it opened at 12:05 am on the 18th. Therefore my opinion might be a little biased. I really liked it, as well as the first movie. Even if you don't know or particularly like the story line, you have to admire the effort that went into making these movies.

As always, the books are much better than the movie could hope to be. I have read LOTR many times as well as the other related works by J.R.R. Tolkien. You really have to admire the depth that this story has. Weather this comes through in the movies is not always clear.

Although it's about "wizards and elves"...the story, at it's heart, is about friendship, the struggle to do what's right and other good stuff like that. I guess you just have to be able to use your imagination to get into the story.

well my opinion might be biased as well since i work in a video store, i would have to say that LOTR's is going to be 1 of the most successful trilogies of all time, i was viewing the sales report of just the first 1 and it has been 1 of the most successful movies on DVD and VHS, so u can go and bad mouth it all u want, but i see the facts that u dont, but i personnally like the books better but the movies are amazing and very well done and i enjoy the fact that it is all being filmed one after another so that none of the characters age and it has the same characters..... and it is not about wizards and elves, it is based on mythology, and Tolkien is 1 of the best fantasy writers of all times(and yes i know he is dead)...

I'm a huge fan of the books have read them many times since I was a kid. The Lord of the Rings series is the 2nd most widely read book on the planet, second only to the Bible I believe, so I definitely think the movies and DVDs will do extremely well. Thats a huge reputation to live up to.

The movies can never compare with the books but I was impressed with how well Peter Jackson managed the first movie considering the HUGE scope of the books. Yes, he took some creative license in the first one, but overall I thought he did better than any other book-to-movie adaptation I'd seen for anything else.

So, with that in mind, we ordered our tickets for The Two Towers like a month ago and showed up early to be at the front of the line. *sigh* I was a little disappointed with TT :( Visually it was just as impressive as the first - the battles and creatures were well done - HelmsDeep battle, Ents  My issue was with the amount of creative license that they took with the scene involving Faramir (and his group), Frodo and Sam. I'm not going to go into detail, but I just think there was NOTHING gained for the storyline by changing things as they did. In fact, they probably spent more money to support the "new version" than they would've the original and they gained nothing from the change - didn't recoup any time or money that I could see. So WHY did they do it??

I would still go and see it as a matter of general principle, and yes I was entertained overall - just feeling let down somehow.. I guess I expected more of Peter Jackson and the people he worked with in adapting the books. They are all supposedly huge fans and I just don't see how they thought certain changes were still in keeping with the original.

Slightly depressed now,
Heather

Loved the first movie, and am going to see the second installment next week after my @#%$ exams are over.

I read the books a long time ago, and I really enjoyed it. I must profess that I skimmed past all the poetry and songs, though... not my cup of tea. But the storyline is fantastic.

I have a great respect for the scope and detail of the trilogy. MOST people's life work will amount to far less creatively and not even come close to having the same effect LOTR and Tolkien's other works have had on many generations and many more to come.

That being said, and I know I'm fighting a losing battle against this crowd;), I just don't find the characters or their quest all that enthralling. Great visually and sonically, I just don't find it as gripping as others do. To each their own and thank god for individuality!!!

And a final note... Hyghbrid, sales are NO indication of a movie's worth. Just take Titanic as one example;).

Peace.

We saw it last night and I must say that I liked the first better, but considering most sequels+ are not are good as the first ones, it as good. I completely agree with Heather on the Helmsdeep battle and Ents! WOW!

I can speculate as to why they expanded on the Faramir/Frodo/Sam scenes, but I'm not going to.

I'm getting the first, and will now be buying the 2nd when it comes out.. and the 3rd as well :)

I really enjoyed the first movie -- and I can't wait to see the second, I'm thinking of going on New Years... should be fun :)

I must admit that I haven't read the books -- and maybe that makes the movies more enjoyable for me, not having anything to compare them against...

I actually bought the Extended version DVD for the first movie last month -- haven't had time to watch it yet though -- the movie takes up 2 DVDs!! That's crazy... have to leave myself a whole day to watch it... LOL :)

But anyways, I'm really looking forward to seeing the second movie -- from everything else that I've heard, it's supposed to be better than the first :)

I really have to see it a few more times to really get a better feeling for it. It was the same with the first movie. To me, the changes from page to screen almost overshadow the rest of the movie. I just have to accept that it's Peter Jackson's version of it. It's not so much a sequal as continuation of the same story. It just can't be constrained into one movie theater sitting. I encourage everyone to see the Special Edition of Fellowship because it is a more comlete movie than the theatrical version. I assume the 2nd movie will be the same.

I just find it really exciting to finally see these things on the big screen after loving this story all of my life.

I've read the books and seen the movie. They are not the same because they're not the same media. You must remember the movie is not a book and can't be compared to the book as you are seeing some one elses interpetation of the book, even if J.R. Tolkien had written the screen play, directed, produced and edited the movie himself it would still be different then the book. It's like comparing apples and oranges. As a movie it's a fantastic movie, the cinematography is great, and although the movie is a bit long it's a long story that is being compressed into a 3 hour time frame. There are few movies that can compare to the LOTR trilogy.

The first movie was amazing, and the second was even better. I dont see how they could have improved anything (other than replacing liv tyler with someone who can act) Everything in the two movies was perfectly done. Followed the books pretty well, other than leaving out a few small details.

I could honestly say, If you're not a fan of the average elves and wizard story, you'll still love this movie. I dont think theres anything in it to complain about. The speacial effects are amazing, the story is solid, the characters are awesome, and all the acting and character placement was well done.

Watching the second movie. you almost feel as if you're in it. It really grabs you and takes you for a ride.

Amazing movies so far, can't wait for the next.

i read the books several times. loved them. I loved the fellowship of thering movie and i loved the two towers as well. both were amazing. yes although they changed much with Faramir but the ending between Faramir and Frod and Sam was the same and led into whatthe book had done. I agree with Linds in that you have to accept the movies as movies and the books as books. if you can separate the two and not compare them you will find that the movies are awesome. the only gripe i had was that Celeborn died, i could not believe that but someone dies in every movie that upsets peole. but i loved the movie anyhow. Jackson is a genius. and is the extended DVD version of the fellowship of the ring really that much greater. i guess I'll have to get it.
