Because I'm impatient and don't think that albino boa will be at the place, I was considering a sand boa. I figure I could make an real b.a. setup with sand and what not, but I read some websites that said not to use sand. I don't want to use aspen 'cause that gave my other snake mites when I tried to give him a nice setup. Has anyone used sand with their boa without any repercussions?

I have used sifted play sand with many species of reptile for probably over a decade now, including sand boa's, for some I would feed outside of the enclosure but most right in there, I have never had an impaction or anything ever, im not saying its not possible because im sure it is a possibility, I have had Lampros eat paper towel they are housed on, it really doesn't matter what you use there will always be risks, use your best judgement and good luck with your knew critters! Enjoy!

I used sand for baos aswell as mulch. Both worked. The mulch I'd dry out before putting it in there. They don't like the humidity too much. The sand I think they preferred for burrowing. Otherwise, no problems with feeding for both.

Aspen is not what "gave" your other snake mites. It either had them to begin with & they just got to the point where you noticed them or they could have came with the aspen, but the store where the aspen was purchased is where the mites would have been from not the aspen itself. The mites came from a "host" most likely snakes at the store where the aspen was purchased. Aspen is a great substrate, as far as shavings go its the substrate of choice. ;) Mark
p.s. when I kept/bred SBs I kept them in "playground' sand

I have SB's and use aspen just because they seem to like it best but there nothing wrong with sand. Buy your aspen from a quality store and check that there are no tears in the bag and youll be fine. But with sand boas you should never feed them in there habitat. They almost never bite unless they think you finger is a mouse. Which if there fed in there incloser is easy for them to do. Good luck I love mine
