Garter Not Eating???

i have no idea to tell if my garter is eating...its a common gartersnake caught in wisconsin...but i do not know if it is eating...is there a quick way i can tell so i know if i should change the food or keep using the same one....right now i am using rather small crickets from my tarantula's food supply

ok not many snakes (if any) like bugs. try earthworms. i had a garter snake and it loved those things. if you have trouble finding one, the snake will sniff and hunt it out for himself. when it gets bigger try some frogs and possibly a small mouse. i hope this isn't too late and it died or you released it by now. but if i learned something, its snakes are happier in the wild. i would just spend 50-80 bucks on a corn or milk snake. they get a bit bigger and dont know how great it is to be free so they would be aggressive or unhappy. hope this helped. later.

I kept a wild-caught baby garter snake for a short time a while ago. It ate earthworms, but only if I left the room first. I suggest that you try earthworms, and leave the room immediately after you put them in there. I think that my presence was frightening the snake, and if yours is wild-caught you might be having the same problem. The reason I was sure it was actually eating is that when I returned five minutes later it was opening and closing its mouth and making swallowing motions that I have not seen it make under any other circumstances. However, I don't have much experience in keeping snakes, so other people on this forum may have better advice for you. I only kept the snake for a week in order to discover if I liked keeping a pet snake. (I didn't want to end up with a pet I didn't enjoy watching that would continue to be my pet for years)

I kept a wild-caught baby garter a while ago (for one week, after which I returned it to the wild), and it ate earthworms. However, it would only do this if I was out of the room at the time. If yours is wildcaught, you might have the same problem. Try leaving the room immediately after you put in the earthworms, and then returning in about 5 or 10 minutes. When I came back at about that point, my garter was opening and closing its mouth and making swallowing motions with its throat muscles that I've never seen except in that situation. You could also try live fish. I understand that some garters will eat that even if they won't touch anything else. If you still can't get the snake to eat and you caught it from the area you are living in, I'd release it. You might want to do that anyway as wild caught snakes generally make poorer pets than captive bred ones, and depending on the location and the subspecies removing an individual from the wild could damage the wild population, or be illegal.

But you know what really gets Grater snakes feeding well?

Minnows or Feeder Guppies.....it's like Garter Snake Caviar! LOL

I'm wondering if you know of somewhere I could find captive-bred garter snakes that is in Canada? I'd really like to get a permenant pet snake and I have fallen in love with garter snakes.

I live in oshawa and theres a store called d and d exotics im 99% sure they have garters im going on the weekend and will check for you (captive bred too)

I live in BC, and I'm not quite ready to aquire a snake yet, but if you happen to find out where they are getting their snakes, or if they ship them that would be wonderful. Thanks!

Does anyone know if breeders in the states ship to Canada and if this is impossible/difficult and expensive/or really easy?

I may end up getting a corn snake or milk snake if garters are too hard to obtain legally in Canada. Some of them are really beautiful.

On a different note, a lot of the garter snakes in my area have an area(s) of missing scales with red or brown skin. I'm wondering if this is an illness or if something took a bite out of them. The neonates seem to have more of these marks than the adults.

the missing scales and brown marks are probably mites. i had a garter snake that had them. they are small ugs that eat theyre way through the scales usually around the eyes. really nothing you can do if theyr wild.
