View Full Version : toes falling off
i have a leopard gecko that is only a couple of months old. i just noticed today that his back feets toes are really shriveled and small and dead looking. it doesnt seem to be causing him any pain, at least that i can tell, but this worries me. his left foot is a lot worse than his right foot, but both look this way. his front feet are fine. what should i do?

It could be one of two resons.
1. Some shed skin is still atached and is cutting off blood flow.
Soak animal for 20-30 min in warm water, then gently peel the dead skin off.
2.Inproper husbandary conditions could have done some damage.
Correct the husbandary problem(s) and take him to the vet.
There could be a number of other resons that I am not aware of. I am not a vet, but the best advice I can give u is take him to one.
Good luck.

It's probably retained skin from a shed constricting his toes. Do you have a humidity chamber in his cage for him? He needs that. You need to soak him for 20 minutes in warm water (just enough to wet his feet) and then I use small tweezers to gently pull the skin off the toes.

Make sure you have a humid hide.
It sounds like it may be too late for his back toes, but try to peel off the dead skin on the feet. Follow the posters instructions above me.

Likely caused by retained shed as already suggested. In reguards to "warm bath" many folks kill their stuff by not doing this properly. Remember we are 98.6 F so a "warm bath" is actually way in excess of 100F. Even luke warm is too hot for most herps, still over 100F. A bath using water of around 80-85 F is the best & know the temp as it would actually be a slightly cool bath not a warm or luke warm one. Also NEVER leave a herp unsupervised in a bath. I know lots of snake folks who have lost snakes due to thermal shock due to a "warm" or "luke warm" bath. Mark

Also you may not be able to save the toes so if it happens and you lose them. Make sure the stubs stay clean and heal properly.
