You will find the exact info you're looking for in the book "The Art Of Keeping Snakes" by Phillipe DeVosjoli (probably spelled that wrong), by Advanced Vivarium Systems.

I have it, and it helped me make a nice planted vivarium for my rainbow boa. Check it out, you won't be dissapointed.

rainbow boas and balls have WAY different needs.. a ball is from africa and dwells most of there lives in abandoned ant holes.. if your looking for natural for a ball.. well sorry bud you picked the wrong snake.. youd need WAY larger than 65 gal.. as far as i know these sand mound ant hills are like 3 feet tall. ( dont quote me its late and im tiered.. lol).. you would need a room..

build a nice display with that 65 gal and pop a corn snake in there.. theyed love it and would be a much better display snake.. ( considering balls hide most of the time.) also its on the "cheap" side.. ( no animal should be considered cheap).. then pop your ball in a rubbermaid or a custom wooden enclosure... these wooden enclosures can be a display in themselves without sacraficing the comfort of the snake.. they keep humidity and heat alot better than a tank... use false rock as hides with a substrate and a clay waterdish and youll have a perfect display for a ball..

why on earth would you need to put a termite mound in the cage? ball pythons hide in all kinds of burrows and holes in the wild, not just in termite hills...
anyway, yeah bps are secretive and not the best display, but you can still use plants with them if you want. the way i look at it, you can have a boring snake in a boring cage or a boring snake in an interesting cage. its really not that much more work unless you have lots of snakes.

my rainbow boa is also secretive but it at least hides in the plants sometimes where you can sortof see it. and yes, of course ball pythons and brbs have different needs...

Heres what the art of keeping snakes says:

A dry substrate that is a mix of soil, leaf litter and/or grass. Shrub like plants and small trees. umbrella plants, ficus, and dracaena as background plants. for shelter, create a mound of substrate that they can burrow into, or anchor acork bark hide aganst the glass for a shelter you can look into. use a red bulb at night so you can watch its nocturnal habits.
