I live in Ontario and in the last few years never seem to see turtles in pet stores anymore. Occasionally there are some red ear sliders in a few stores, but thats it. I remember when pet stores around here would have map, musk, softshell, cooters, and slider turtles available. What happened? I've been looking for a musk turtle for some time now but can't find any anywhere.

It all depends where you live... lots in GTA, and none in Eastern Ontario. But overall in Canada, we don't have very many and most for sale are smuggled in.

The reason there is such a small number of turtles/tortoises is because the Canadian borders have resricted the importation and exportation of all chelonians. It goes into much more detail, but that is basically the reason why there are so few. So everything you see in Canada was either bred in Canada or as Wu-Gwei said, smuggled in from the U.S. Your best bet to finding what you want is to keep looking, you'll eventually run into one.
