My snakes don't recognize cameras. I bet you if you placed your camera inside the cage without you holding it, your snake wouldn't either. I have a tough time believing that a snake could recognize an inanimate object.
Try holding a block of wood up the same way you hold your camera and see if it ellicites the same response.
But it would be cool if I was wrong. I would have a serious new-found respect for their intelligence.
As for intelegence, one of our snakes has figured out how to slide the glass door for her cage. thankfully she hasn't figured out how to remove the locking sticks that we have set in to prevent that.

you know Jeff i think i will try that with the wood block. its just he never snaps at me anymore unless I am holding the camera. and i don't shove it in his face. i'll be taking a side shot and he'll spin around and snap. i found it funny but now its interesting.
I have a few that get all bothered when I try to take pics, they just don't like the idea me hovering around them at all and tend to strike at the lens. My most reliable camera-biter...

Jeff, we are aware of those locks, just find them annoying to have to remove to take the snake out. Since the wood stop is outside the tank I think we are pretty safe :)
