Help Please

I found a baby garter snake on my kitchen counter this morning. He's gone now but I want to know how he got on my counter and how to make sure no more come back. I live on the first floor of an apartment and I'm horrified at the thought of waking up in bed with one of these snakes.

well, its getting colder so they are probably looking for good places to hibernate. Are there any windows in your kitchen? Its hard to figure out where it came in because they can fit in just about any opening bigger than their head. Once it snows you wont have to worry about them because they wont move around until spring. Do you have a cat? sometimes a cat will bring one in. Sorry im not much help :(

no my kitchen has no windows and I have a cat but she doesn't go out side. Do you know if they can climb up cabinets, because I can't figure out howhe got there. Thankyou

Snakes are escape artists and some are unbeliveable climbers, depending on what type of snake. As for myself i dont know of any snake that hibernates, but he is probably looking for a nice warm place to hang around for the winter. Where do you live and what did the snake look like? If a snake got in the house its a good chance it's too small to harm anyone.

Hmm, Snakes can pretty much climb anything if they have too. Was they anythign left on the counter, I.e Meat etc. They muct be a way there getting in, unless someone is playing a pretty sad joke on you. I dont really no much about these snakes, but i suppose liek everyone else is saying, its getting cold now so that may be the reason. Don't worry, theres nuffin to worry about, if it does actually get that bad, get a specilist in to see them out. Or ship them to scotland and give me the little **** :P

If it snows, they hibernate. All herps in my area hibernate, including garter snakes.

Just curiuos, Not saying your wrong or out, But like they have adders up in scotland, and i presume they hibernate aswell.

Thanks for all the help. I think I was just a little freaked out. I'm okay now , but my cat hasn't stopped prowling the kitchen. There was no food left out on the counter and I'm surprised that I didn't find him by the cat's canned food in the hallway instead.

I would bet that it came in along the plumbing for the sink. Look under the sink where the pipes come in & I bet there is lots of room for it to get by. Its just looking for a warm spot for winter. Your cat will just kill it if it finds it & is likely that the cat knows its still around the kitchen if its hanging out there lots. Pay attention to where the cat seems most interested & thats where the snake or its access will be. Mark
