So what would be the best subsrtate to use??

i use cypress mulch for all my corns, It looks nice, easy to clean, holds moisture
but there are plenty of other options i.e. sand, aspen, newpaper etc...

I like to use newspaper, but with my baby corns they just hide underneith it so I have them on coconut bark. That way its easier to find them then moving all the newspaper around

We're using Cypress Mulch for one, Astroturf for another pair, and aspen shavings for another one. The humidity is hard to control in the astro turf but it's easiest to spot clean.

I don't like news paper cause the inks rub off on the snake.

I use paper towels for my corn snakes, but like Kathy said, the corns hide under it. The advantage of using paper towels is that they are easy to spot clean and there is no risk of the snake swallowing substrate while eating.

I like coconut husk too. Back when I was surgical teching I saw impaction surgeries from the mulches and barks, not too often but enough to make me worry, maybe like 5-7 cases a year.

I have the repti bark in mine should i just spot clean it or how often should it be changed??

I use retpibark and aspen. I use the aspen for my normal, she shows up really nice on it. And I use Reptibark for my snow for the same reason.

I spot clean the reptibark and when I do a full cleaning of the tank(every 2 weeks) I put all clean reptibark in and then wash the other stuff. I have two amounts that I cycle through.

Cypress Mulch, Repti-bark, and Aspen Shavings
Cypress holds humidity better than the others and is a LOT cheaper.
Make sure you treat any of them with a bug spray such as Provent-a-mite or Black Knight before putting them in your cages.

i use cat litter!

actually, this kitty litter is made of 100% corn just dried and dried into small gravel-like granules.
it`s dust free, odourless, holds fluids extremeley well AND is digestable in small quantities! having said that i put a paper towel in the viv at feeding time and put the pinkie on that juuust incase the snake does ingest some litter!
the petshop i bouhgt my snake from has used this substrate for years and readily recommends it to all its customers!

Cat Litter??? Thats a first. Never heard that one before. I use Aspen but feed them on little white paper plates.

Folks on the Aussie newsgroups are really fond of cat litter there too, but theirs is made of recycled paper pellets. It's supposed to be very absorbent and easy to spot clean.

I wish we had more interesting kitty litter choices in my local stores. I only find clay, the clumping stuff and that crystal stuff.
