1) keep it in its enclosure (so it feels safe and warm) and let it regulate its own temperature. dont stress the animal.

2) keep temps on the high end appropriate for retics 81F-93F (belly heat makes best - but not so hot as to burn the snake) while maintaining a thermal gradient.

3) is the snake weezing or clicking when it respires?

4) any bubbles coming out of its mouth or nostrils?

5) is the snake slow and lazy(lethargic) - or any unusual activity for a retic?

6) what do you mean by breathing hard?

just to be on the safe side - take it to a vet. RI's in snakes are fairly obvious and easily treated.

BUT, if its eating on its own, and its not acting lethargic when handled (acting sick) - then keep the temps on the high-end, the humidity on the LOW end, and try to get it too eat. if it eats and the temps are OK then the snake should get over it on its own (thats if the RI isnt progressed too far, IF it is an RI).

reptiles have an amazing ability to heal themselves (in the proper conditions), especially retics.

good luck - hope all goes well with that little bugger.

try to feed him - keep him warm.

could there be a possibility of a birth defect? if not - then not too worry, but keep a close eye!

from the sounds of it he/she sounds OK. you are just being very observant with your new snake... some snakes are loud breathers - just like some people are.

now its time to hook train your new retic ;)

bro you got to get a new keyboard LOL!!

if its 5ft its probably more like 4-5 months old - if its well fed!

retics can easily grow like 8-10 inches per month if fed very well - depending on genetics.
