Hello, I'm in the need for some more animals and have started to put together an octagon show tank for geckos and tree frogs (undecided on species yet). I'm really excited about this project but I have a few questions.
I'm not thinking anything fancy for the geckos probably cresties and for the frogs I'm really bent on red eyed tree frogs. Can these species live harmonisly together?
I'd also like to put in some live plants, But I don't want to buy garden variety subtrate (I'm worried about paracites or harmful bacteria). Any suggestions would be helpful?
Peace out and thanks for reading. Any suggestions are appreciated

But the cresteds would like eat all the crickets and stuff. the cresteds would consider the frogs a good source of protien. not a good idea.

Hey Camille, go easy I'm no expert on Gecko's but I have a beautiful tank that I want to put together. I no that you should'nt put animals together, but some animals can co-exist and I did'nt see any reason why they could'nt be put together. I now realize that the gecko i picked is to big. What about if I picked a smaller sized Gecko, then can they co-exist in the same tank?

Community housing is just a bad idea, period. Toxicity, stress, disease, competition for food, parasites are just a few reasons. In the wild, no two seperate species would be forced to live in such close quarters on a consistent basis. Just have one fabulous tank with Cresteds, they make a great display as they are extremely active at night. I personally have 5 in 3 seperate tanks, and they are some of the faves of my collection.....

True your probably right crankyboy, I'm just really wanting to have a small ecosystem display and geckos & frogs sounded like a really interesting idea. So I'll brainstorm some more before I commit to anything yet.

Glad to hear it. I've learned from my own mistakes in the past that you can never do enough research.

what you want to do is possible, you just need a very large cage. I think diurnal lizards like anoles would be better with treefrogs as they would be active at different times of the day and not compete. Make sure the frogs have somewhere to hide where the lizards can't bother them during the day. You should look for books on keeping herps in more naturalistic environments (very rare since so many people opt to keep their herps like lab rats), the Barrons's series book 'Frogs, Toads and Treefrogs' has some information on this, and AVS' book 'The Art Of Keeping Snakes' is very good, of course it is about snakes but you could easily keep lizards in the setups described.
They need different habitat requirements - so I don`t think it would work as well as you like - besides that I am almost sure the cresties would see them as a source of food

Dweidran I made a very nice looking cage out of a floor model t.v. It turned out kinda smaller then i thought I wanted to put a ball python in it. It was a bit of work but a lot of fun and I was worried about the same thing so I really scrubbed out the inside with bleech and water. I was so proud of it till my dad smached it with a sledge hammer. I put a nice background in and lots of greenery, it had a removable lid....damn

Thaks Chris, I have lots of books on snakes and I like the barron books for a general guide. I believe my tank may be small it's octogon shaped 12" each pane. 18" across and back, and 32" high. It's a fair size but probably too small?
