Eggs!!!! We've got Yellowfoot eggs!!

Very rare breeding in Canada,

Well for about a month now our largest female has been laying eggs.
She layed 1 egg,1 egg,11 eggs. so 13 total

She is about 8-10 years old, we have had her for 5 years now. She was bred to our young male of about the same age. 4-5 months in the incubator and we'll see.
Just knowing she is now sexualy mature is great in it self.

Yellowfoots are so personable and ours run to see you as we come in the reptile house. But they do get big, our girl is a little over 13 inches long currently.

My wife really gets the credit for these guys, Great job Josee!

thats great!!!!! so you got eggs from yellowfoots? wow!!!! I currently own an adult female, i wanted to get her a male but there are none. maybe ill talk to ya in a bit,lol.

Yup, 13 eggs from the yellowfoot tortoises now. And no need to look for a male
just send your girl my way. I'm always looking for yellowfoots 8 inch plus.

I was curious so i measured my tort, she is 12 inches, I only measured her shell, thats what I was supposed to do right? They are really personable critters, Mine follows me around the house when I let her out for a stroll.

Congrats! Hopefully they incubate good and you'll have 13 little ones by the time spring comes around. Do you keep any other species of tortoises?

You measure the SCL (Straight carapace length) - length of shell without the curve. You can use calipers for smaller specimens, and larger ones, I sandwich between two telephone books and meaure that distance.

This has been such a great experience, seeing a nest being dug......
Words can't say enough on this one.

No we don't keep any other turtle/tortoises than our yellowfoots. We plan
on working only with these and expanding our herd.
But we do live next to a beaver pond and have western painted and common snappers
nest on our front lawn.

And as above SCL to measure.

awe thats awesome!!! Is t he care of yellowfoots easy? Do they need to be hibernated? My sister and i are hoping she gets the ok to get her first tort but we are currently saving and learning ^^ She is 16 and i am 23 with a collection of herps myself so its nice to see her interested.

Who could pass up a tort anyways? lol
