View Full Version : Brumation temps...

I have been monitoring the temps in my basement closet for a few weeks now. With a 30 degree outside temp range the closet temp has been a consistent 60. In all the books I have, they say to brumate kings at 50 to 60 degrees. Is 60 going to give me worse results?

Any help would be great, this is my first time breeding kings.

Thanks!

I think you'll be fine. Not sure what ssp. you have, but I breed a bunch and if I can get 'em down to 60F here in FL., it's great. Down to about 50 tonight maybe--but it doesn't last long. I've bred many with no cool down at all. Pyros included. Alterna seem to need a cool wintering. I use a calcium supplement in the spring for them too. If I can help out, let me know.

55F is the well-documented temperature for brumation (I think you are asking for your Cal Kings right?), but many breed colubrids with no winter cool down at all. And they are quite successful.

Yeah, I'm asking mainly about my cal kings, but also one sinaloan that won't be bred until I find him a mate.

Thanks guys.

I think we're going to have to get a basement or something... it's too warm for us to brumate.
