Currently there are around 50 snakes listed on the World Conservation Union's Redlist of Threatened Species, and many more at-risk, threatened and endangered snake species all over the world.
How You Can Help Snakes
Encourage people who see snakes on the road or on their property not to kill them. If possible and safe, help the snake get across the road.
Make sure you help it in the direction it’s going.
If you see any snake products (stuffed dead snakes, snake skin boots, snake meat, etc) do not buy them! Even if you try to justify that you didn't kill the animal you are supporting the demand and another snake will have to be killed to replace the purchased item.
Do not use and encourage others not to use rat-poison, as snakes eat mice and rats this could kill them if they eat a poisoned rodent.
Donate money to local conservation areas and conservation efforts.
Do not catch snakes from the wild for pets. You could be taking the mother of the next batch of future snakes. If you really love these animals you will leave them in the wild. If you wish to have a pet snake you can buy captive bred ones at most local pet stores. Ask the pet store staff if the snakes are captive bred or wild caught. Do not support the demand of wild caught snakes. Buy only captive bred ones.
People should also never buy endangered or protected snake species for pets, or buy ‘’venomoids’’ (venomous snakes that have had their venom glands surgically removed). This is inhumane to the snake!
If you do not want snakes in or around your property you can do the following.
-Keep your grass cut short.
-Make sure there are no cracks or fissures in your house foundation.
-Make sure debris such as wood, tires, rock piles, and leaf litter is picked up (they can act as shelter for snakes).
-Try to keep plants & bushes away from the foundation of the house.-Use mulch in the garden beds but not too thickly.
-Trim the lowest limbs on shrubs and bushes so they are at least 12 inches from the ground.
-Construct a fence around your garden with a heavy galvanized screening. Make it three feet wide with quarter-inch mesh. Be sure to bury the bottom of it six inches below the soil surface.
-Moths Balls are also said to keep snakes away.
