New cage for leos

Here's a pic of a new cage I built. The top three will be for some of my leopard geckos, and the bottom two are for my grey bands.

All the cages are 24x16x14 and the whole thing is one unit made of 5/8 melamine. I'm planning on heating this with some red rope light. I have 18' of it and I'm getting temps of about 100F off the rope. I figure with a dimmer I can regulate the temp, but only testing this will tell if it works. If it does it'll be a cheap way to heat this. 18' of rope light cost me all of $7.50 at Lowe's. :)

That's really nice, what is rope light though??? like the stuff along the aisle at the movie theater? and is that the actual lighting for the enclosures too? sorry, just don't know what rope light is........ sounds like a cool idea though.

I've been wondering, Im going to be building a cage soon myself and was going to be using the front sliding glass door, is there any alteratives too those kind of locks you show in the pics??? I don't really like them all that much and would like to use something else if there is something...

How much does something like that weigh? and do you plan to anchor it to the wall (just in case)????

Looks pretty good. for an alternative to the locks you can use a piece of wood, like people do on sliding patio doors

Hey Lisa, I get what your saying but that only takes care of one side.... the piece of glass on the inner track will still be free to be opened.

Ha ha.... reminds of a time when my parents tried to lock me out after I had snuck out of the house one night. We had windows that opened the same way (slide sideways) and they put a little peice of wood in the track too without thinking of the otherside.... should of seen there face when I walked out of my bedroom and sat down for breakfast like nothing happened.... Prieceless!!!

I guess I can deal with the locks......

Well, I got the rope light installed (I'll post some pics tonight), but the temps aren't what I expected. It is about 80-81F within a couple of inches of the light (86F right next to the light) and 75 on the opposite end; lower than I expected. The top enclosure is about 2 degrees F warmer than the bottom one. Any ideas on how I can raise the warm end about 5 degrees F? Maybe some kind of small incandescent I can use that I can turn off at night? If I can do that then the rope light can stay on all the time and I'll get a nice night time temp drop of ~ 5-10F.

actually we put a stick on both sides. works pretty well for us, and since it's wedged in the track the snakes can't pick it out due to a lack of fingers and thumbs
