Hi everyone, I have a little situation, and Im just curious on what your opinions are here... My little sister has a pet ferret that accidently got outside last wednesday, and someone called us today saying they found him, BUT after spealing with the lady today, she does not want to give him back unless we give her $150 she claims to have spent on supplies for it (after 4 days).. The first time I spoke with her, she said she couldn't return the stuff because she bought it all from friends, and then when I spoke with her a second time in the evening, she said that the petstore she bought it all from won't take it back because it's used. I honestly don't believe that though, I think that after 4 days, the petstore wouldnt care as long as the stuff wasnt ruined. She would not tell me the name of the store, as I offered to call the store myself and see what they said. In my opinion, it was her mistake to spend any money on the animal, because obviously it was someones pet, and she should just accept her loss. We phoned the city police and they told us we aren't obligated to pay a cent to retrieve our pet... Anyone have any input on this? I'm going to speak with the lady again tomorrow and see what she says, I told her today that we'll at most give her some reward money and buy any food she bought for the beast but that was all. Ill suggest that again, and if not I guess we'll have to go call up the cops and get their help.

some people live just to piss other people off..
that is not right and you should not have to pay anything for your our pet. that really bugs me because i have kids and can feel for your sister as a pet is part of your family. you should get a recorder and record what she says and get her to say that its not her and that it is your. (you know what i mean). i would be very upset and dont think i would be able to be nice at this point as she is being unreasonable and very uncaring.

You CAN take that up with the police. It would be the same as if she had found a lost bicycle or car of yours and was refusing to return it. You have offered her SOME compensation for her "losses" and you have offered to contact the "store" and make an arrangement to help with her "losses" . I think she wants to keep the animal....sorry to say but i've seen people do that with other lost pets...they keep them for themselves. I hope that this lady doesnt think she can do that.
But the police saying that they cant do anything is a load of sh*t. They DO need proof that she has your animal and that she knows its yours and not hers ( as said by kane69 ) . A tape recorder would work well.
If all else fails you can try and contact the humane society...could be a long shot but i know they've dealt with this before and may be of more support and help than the cops would be.
Just a few suggestions i really do hope that your sister gets her pet back.

Oh,sorry, the police never said they wouldnt do anything, we havnt asked them, but Im sure the will.. I agree with what you said corrupt_kitten, just like if I left a bike somewhere and someone took it. We have the lady's full name, phone # and mailing adress.. She actually works right beside my house as well lol. I will call her tomorrow and lay out the options..She can willingly return it, or I will phone the police and have them get it back for us. I think that by now though, any reward is void haha.

Dude i wouldnt call her and tell that if u dont return the ferret ill call the cops cuz she just might get rid of the ferret or something the best thing is talk to the cops first and ask their advice.....dont let her know that u r gonna call the cops...cuz it can help u but it might ruin ure chances cuz u have no proof that she has ure ferret...secondly did u go to her place and have a look that its really ure ferret she has.

Worst case scenerio, if she wants you to pay $150 for the equipment she bought, then all of that stuff she bought would be yours. And of course, all of the reciepts. :)

Well, I spoke with the woman again today, and she refused to return our animal still without being payed off. She works right beside my house and found the ferret the same day we lost it so there's no doubt in my mind that it is ours. My mother is a legal secretary and we've sent her a letter as of today saying that she has until thursday to return the animal, and we'll give her $50, if not, we're going through the police. Also, the radio station put us into contact with her so there's one witness that she has our property... Thanks for the suggestions/opinions all.

Thanks Al.. That's what I figured as well, if it's only been 4 days and the cage etc. was clean, they should accept it back, but she refused to give me the name of the store because I offered to call and ask them myself. I read a copy of the letter sent by my mom's boss (who of course is a lawyer), but the woman doesn't know my mom's the secretary there heh.. Even if we have to give her money for the stuff, and then we can just return it.. In the letter it said we need reciepts to prove she purchased the items... She kept changing her stories to me over the phone though, so I think she's just trying to hustle us or something.. She first told me that her mom found the ferretw hile gardening, and then today she said she found it herself late at night in the parking lot of her work.. What a weirdo.. Ill let you guys know what happens.
She wants a reward and is holding your pet ransom until you offer it. I hope you get it back safe and sound. I wouldn't even offer the $50 at this point if I were you. She doesn't deserve even that much.
I'd a get a policeman to comeover, and both of you approach the woman. This along with your letter will probably scare the old bag to the point where she pays you. lol Good luck and keep us updated.

I find it funny that she found the ferret and immediately went out and spent 150 on it. I think by doing so she had planned on keeping it, but just decided that it wasn't quite the pet she had thought it would be.

Yeah likely.. She showed us a copy of the reciept..She spent $97 on it, and she bought it all from the petstore that my ex girlfriend works at so I emailed her, and she said they'll take it back.. This lady was so full of $#!+.

If I'm not mistaken thats called blackmail. She could have just as easily turned it in to the SPCA, but she decided to keep it. Then she has the nerve to try and sell you back your own pet. If I were you I wouldn't pay her a cent. I'd just give the police a call and ask for assistance in resloving a dispute over stolen property. Go over all the money issues with them and show up to her house with the officer and get the ferret. Thats how I would handle it...Hope this helps. Good luck getting the ferret back.

Very sad. I'd not give the woman a cent if it was me.
Even better, drop off the letter to her at work and make a big production of it. Perhaps even leaving the letter with her boss, then show up at her door come whatever time she's done working with the cops to recover your now stolen property.
I really hate when stupid people try to take advantage of others in this manner.
I wouldn't be bringing the police with me... I'd go kick her door down and take my ferret. If she has a problem with it she can feel free to contact the police and tell them why that was necessary. Thats despicable to try and steal somebody's pet, especially a childs. What kind of person does that take???

it is your pet...if she has never had a ferret there is a good chance it has not being taken care of properly, get the police over there and get you ferret...i wouldnt give her a cent...sue her for what you can..she stole your pet and wont give it up..thats ILLEGAL!.
There should be no debate.
my 2 cents
adam
I agree with everyone else I would not give her anything. She has your pet, she knows it is your pet and she isn't returning it, that is theft. I'd have her charged.

Wow, that's incredibly stupid advice.
Not to mention illegal. Breaking and entering, and quite possibly assault. I really hope you never try anything like that in the real world. Best case scenario you get arrested.. worst case you get shot. Not a good idea no matter how you slice it. I agree that what this lady is doing is despicable, but doing stupid and illegal stuff is not the way to resolve the issue.
She is illegally holding the ferret. Contact the police and report stolen property.
