Southern Ringnecks could be 8" as adults, or up to around 15" as adults. I have a couple around 16". The biggest ringneck snake ever recorded was 42", and one sub-species commonly gets to 30".
They have quite a prey list.
Snakes, worms, frogs, toads, salamanders, fish, mice, slugs, ant larvae, and I'm probably skipping on a few.
The one you found in CA was most likely a snake eater, I'm thinking you found a Coral-Bellied Ringneck Snake. I have seen them eat kingsnakes.
