Is there any paint that will cover finished wood, or do I have to sand it it first?
I'm trying to avoid sanding at all costs..

So, the wood has polyeurethane (think i spelt that right) on it and you want to remove it or does it have varnish? If you want to get rid of either you have to sand it off for the paint to stick better.

In order to cover any varnish or polyureathane you will have to sand it. sanding does not require that you take it all off! just hand sand to take the shine off. then you will need a good quality primer for a base coat. this will allow your paint to adhere well. The rule here is never to try to apply a base coat and (your primer) and two finish coats (your actual paint) in one day. the best results come from allowing each coat to dry properly. this prevents moisture from building up between coats which can cause blistering ( bubbles ). this is amplified when painting in a small area without good air circulation. a fan and a 24 hr span between coats is a good cure here.
