New Orleans Mayor has ordered a mandatory evacuation with a Category 5 hurricane bearing down on the city.
The Mayor has opened up the Superdome as a shelter of last resort, though he did warn those who stay of Katrina’s high winds, 28-foot storm surge and 15 inches of rain that threatened to overwhelm the city’s protective levees.
About 1 million of the 1.3 million people living in New Orleans are believed to have evacuated.
Over the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico, Katrina intensified to a Category 5 giant hurricane with top winds of 175mph. 25feet+ of standing water is expected in many parts of the city.
The levees that protect the city, which is as much as 10feet below sea level in some spots, could collapse due to the possible 14 hours of hurricane-force winds and enormous waves on Lake Pontchartrain.

I would like to personally extend my thoughts out to those who might be affected by this storm. It is expected to hit at around sunrise this (Monday the 29th) morning.
