A female must be at least 10 months of age and 50 grams to breed. Of course, everything must be perfect. Feeding perfect, defecating on schedule, nothing can be off. The best age/weight to breed though is at least 1 to 1-1/2 years and 60 grams. Some females may never reach that wait, but its nice to aim for. Breeding at my recommended age better assures that egg-binding and/or other breeding problems wont occur. Make sure to do plenty of reseaerch, start when breeding season begins and ask a lot of questions. There will be soemone around to help with any questions you may have.

How about rephrasing that to "Breeding at my recommended age better assures that egg-binding and/or other breeding problems do not occur"

Technically there is a breeding season but you can't go by the calendar for that if you're talking captive leos.
Wild ones have a set breeding season, but captives tend to do it whenever they feel like it. In the wild, they normally start breeding in April or possilby May, depending on the weather and the past winter. In captivity where they don't ususally get a winter rest (not many hobbyists cool their leos to simulate a winter cooling period), they get optimum temperatures and food all year long. In this case, they breed whenever they are ready. If the female has rested up and built up her body reserves, she'll mate and produce eggs. My girls start laying in November, are going full force by Christmas. That's when the wild ones are in their winter cooling stage. Other people have theirs start in spring, more in keeping with the wild pattern. I even know of leos in some collections who start in mid-summer and September.

Sorry, that was a typo, good catch.

Second, thats my opinion, its what has worked for me. I have found that my females are much more willing to breed in breeding season. You cannot deny their routes to the wild leos however. I have had problems trying to breed before or after breeding season, so I feel my opinion is justified. It is best to breed in season, its not just a season set for wild leos. But if it works, theres certainly no harm, its perfectly healthy, just a chance the females wont accept the male. After all, dropping temps in the home will happen no matter what in most cases. If you can get your leos to breed before January and after August, fine, but it may not always work out as so. And I was thinking as breeding season as a guideline for how much research should be done, so it was a two way opinion in my view. Just makes sure the proper precautions are taken.
