This guy was in no mood for me today. Getting him out of his enclosure is always an adventure. Atleast I didn't get showered today.

One question? Are you of the tribe :medindian: that believes that snakes should not be handled while they are young?

No I believe that snakes, especially giants, should be handled often when young. I got this guy from someone that never handled him, never fed him, and kept him in an enclosure he couldn't see out of. That being said, he's far from a monster. He's fine once he's out of his enclosure. I'm far from affraid of him or any of my retics.


Alot of ignorance seems to surround retics, more so in Canada it seems. They are not the evil, face grabbing monsters they are made out to be. That reputation in based on the original imported animals that made up the first captive retic populations. The mainland bloodlines do get very large on average. Aside from that, they are very similar in disposition to burms, just more aware and more active when handled. Retics are what a keeper makes them. If they want an aggressive giant, then don't handle it. The same can be said for almost any snake really.

The most aggressive snake I've ever worked with was a hatchling boa constrictor that I have. She was and still can be, insane.

I actually have no preset ideas on snakes personality and depositions. :mednormal : In fact, I have been told NOT to handle my first baby BP Gandalf (I am ignoring that advice) because it would stress him out...contrary to popular opinion, he is not the least bit stressed. Like any animal, I take them on an individual basis. Sorry that the big guy had to undergo that kind of treatment before you got him.

I asked because I believe as you have proven that the less the snakes are handled, the more likely they are to be like some computers (not user friendly).

From what I can see, he's gorgeous...but I am a weinie and I am attached to my limbs. :groove: That's where the remark about getting something so big that I would fear it...comes from. I believe that like most people, I would be leery of any animal that I didn't raise myself.

They have a reputation of grabbing faces??? That's a new one for me... I am attached to my face too. :grab: :joker:

So long as the snake is eating, handling them isn't going to harm them in moderate and gentle amounts. It's way easier to deal with a small aggressive snake, than a large one. Best to get them over it young.
