Ok, well , i went to home depot today, cut a bunch of wood, and brought it home, only to find out it was 1/2 inch melamine, and not 5/8 inch ...ARRRRGGGG!
So, anyone ever used 1/2 inch melamine for enclosures?
Any good/bad experiences?
I only bought the 8 4x2 bottoms for the enclosures, so i am assuming i could do the rest in 5/8"....
And, maybe i could even do each enclosure in 1/2". they will only be 1 foot high...so i it should hold?

if you seal if properly you shouldnt have a problem... the only problem with half inch is it cracks really easy while you are screwing it. If you take your time and pre drill and counter sink you should be ok dude, my arboreals are 3high x 2 x 2 made from half inch and i can stack them no questions...

It should be fine. 1/2 inch is only 1/8" smaller than 5/8". Just do like Jeff said with the pre drilling and etc and you'll be fine.

sounds goo guys, so seeing that i already have the bottoms, would you advise me to get the rest of the wood in 1/2 inch or 5/8"?
Thanks,

Depends how wide you are making the cages/shelves, but 1/2 inch anything will eventually bend.
Didn't you notice it was 10x lighter?? Ha ha! :D

LOL,
thanks jeff! :p
The price tag by the wood said 5/8" so i really didn't think anything about it.
Definately a stupid move on my part.
Anyone wanna buy 8 slabs of 4x2's??? :p

Hey Grant, use the 1/2" for the bottoms, it will work man... because the bottom will be supported by the top of the bottom cage which will be sitting on 5/8" anyways... dont throw it out... those will be fine for the bottoms... :D

if you put a frame and support underneth (it will make you bottom a little higher) e.g. "X" support, you won't have a problem ....but you still might not have a problem .
putting a frame unterneth your enclosure can be done at anytime ....so just do what jeff says and you probably wont have a problem if your stacking!
good luck man and let us know how it turns out

Just do some extra bracing underneath and all should be fine. The 1/2" will be lighter than 5/8" :)
