This really nice freeware program was created by the same person who created MSA Herp.
You can download it at http://www.proherp.com
It's designed for small hobbyists and folks who breed only a few animals (it has limited breeding tracking). I'm personally very excited to see what the pro line of this software will look like--I've heard a lot about the features it will have, and I don't think anyone's ever created anything that comes close.
Now, I've also heard there's a bit of drama going between FreeHerp and HerpMaster...it seems HerpMaster's creator was unhappy with the release of a new freeware tracker, so he's turned his pro line into freeware! (I'm not sure what this is supposed to accomplish, either...)
The end result, though, is that there are now more options for herp keepers, whether they have large or small collections. FreeHerp is perfect for folks who want a simple but complete program that does everything they need for a small collection (it even allows you to input data for feeding an entire rack at once)...HerpMaster would probably be better for folks with a large collection who breed a lot and absolutely don't want to (or can't) actually pay for tracking software. I'm not sure on that one...I'm still downloading it. (Hefty chunk of a program it is).
Well, as ProHerp is developed, it should be interesting to see how HerpMaster responds...they could get into a feature war. At present, what I know about ProHerp suggests it will exceed the capabilities of HerpMaster for ease of use and record-keeping by a considerable margin. Will HerpMaster try to match it? Will ProHerp respond by upping the ante, until we have two herp tracking programs that are actually absolutely complete, and can do EVERYTHING a herper might want, and do it quickly and easily? (How will HerpMaster fund their effort, as they have dropped their pro line?)
I can't wait to find out!
This is going to be win/win for all of us, that's for certain.
