View Full Version : new facts I learned about komodo dragons
I was watching Maximum eXposure (think real-tv but a lot stoopider) just now and they showed some video of komodos and taught me a few new facts. ;) Most interesting was that komodos "have teeth but the dont chew...they dont have to. Their saliva contains acid that breaks down bones and flesh".
Gotta love tv. So all knowing.

What I have seen in some shows has been either repeated or new info.
Komodos are basically scavengers for the most, either they find food and take it from less powerful same species, or steal food from another Komodos kill.
Komodos are not like most powerful animals that fight there food to death and consume, they use a simple to dangerous bite that becomes lethal in the same method as venom.
Komodos do not carry venom glands but there saliva if so full of bacteria that is so toxic that a simple amount layed in an open wound or bite will weaken and slowly digest that prey item in a short time.
Komodos are patient predators, with this saliva injection they literally follow there food till it dies in front of them.
Komodos show massive amounts of aggression towards each other for territory and matting rights as well as food. But they are not as aggressive to say humans if they are not disturbed. A safe distance and a respect for the Komodo, you can literally lay next to them out without being attacked. The only time I saw this was Steve Erwin near a nesting area where 3 - 5 females were engaged with each other over dens and matting.
I have always enjoyed any show with Komodos and real information to learn from. An ancient animal that is part of a era from the dinosuars that still lives in our century.
