Omg!!! Is There A Reason For This?

I just went to my local reptile dealer and bought some feeders.. When i got home and opened the box all my mice were there (five of them) but there tails were cut to an inch except one.... IS THIS NORMAL is this a practice some breeders undertake?....and what would be the reason for this **** ? please reply to this post i simply think it's inhumaine

Actually, I doubt anyone is cutting their tails off. Stressed out rodents sometimes bite eachothers paws and tails, and I have had rats that bit their own tails tips off when stressed.

I have bred over 1000 mice and NEVER seen a mouse lose a tail. These tails look like they were deliberatly cut to an inch. There was not one piece of tail in the box (wait that sounded bad) lol I apreciate your reply but i am having a hard time digesting these tails were bit off and not cutt off...

I phoned the dealer and asked why the tails were like this and my reply was : Yes sometimes we get mice with broken tails.

Me personaly i have a hard time digesting that reason and would believe the biting each others tails off before the lost tails thiery. My opinion and i am seldom wrong i believe they did this so there customers wont breed there mice. I also paid 50 cents more on each mouse $2.50 each instead of the regular 1.99

I also noticed that the store is low on stock and not thriving like it was last year. I would like to hear back from a breeder as i said i bred 1000 mice atleast and never seen this before out of all those mice.

Please someone else respond as i can't stop thinking about this. Thanks everyone !!!

P.S anyone in montreal seen this recently (mice with missing tails) I won't mention the stores name as i believe in innocent until proven otherwise but i do gaurentee if i see this again i will !!! hope your a member of ssnakess dot com and see this (missing tail mouse dealer) and if your not hope an employee is! and it gets back to you so you know this is unaceptable.

last note if i had 4 mice with tails bit off *cough* and owned a store i would feed MY reptiles those mice and give my customers a fully intact mouse if it was me, I mean i am not detective ....it's just common sense : )

I have bred thousands of mice over the last couple years, and NEVER have I had one without a tail, or even a stubby one. Also, curious to know why not having a long tail would stop the owner from breeding them? Did I miss biology class, or are "meeces" sex organs in their tails?
I think, breeder or not, that it is irresponsible to sell "defective" product. I would find a new supplier.

Mykee i meant so people would'nt keep them to breed because of the look of the mouse( 3/4 tail missing) I was literaly apauled by the look of this mouse it was a total shock to see 4 mice running around and all with the same amount of tail missing. This was digusting to look at not to mention it ****** freaked out my children!!! as well as my spouse !!! I am just wondering what there reason is to do something like this because i don't care what anyone says right now in my mind this was a deliberate act of some sort and i am just wondering why is all. There is no reason for this and that was the only reason i could think of .( so people won't keep them due to the mutation) When i breed my own mice i just went down to my local petshop chain (nature) i would pick out my females and males bring them home and in 4-8 weeks i always had some pinkies sometimes 60 - 80 mice produced every 2 months or so. I no longer live where i was and can no longer keep snakes let alone breed mice! (snakes are still around until i am forced by court to get rid of them) But mice will be pushing it lol.

that is really weird that all of them had tails like that. it wouldnt make a whole lot of sence for some one to cut the tails off because they are kind of like the mouse handle, a way to pick them up and not get bitten. im not saying some one didnt cut the tails but it just doesnt make sence. there are alot of freak mice. at the pet store i go to my friend jen that works there likes to keep the odd balls as pets. shes got a few mice and rats with no tails at all, little stubs, no eyes at all, extra legs and so on. they were all picked out of the feeders that were brought in, none were bred to be that way. if the pet store is going down hill and they cut the tails on purpose perhaps thats a good thing. i agree and think you should buy mice some where else.

I have seen mice eat there own tails due to lack of food, and have also seen females chew parts off their babies. I have also seen mice attack one another in crowded spaces causing serious injury, so its reasonable to think that they lost them from and attack.

I highly doubt someone would cut the tails off mice just for fun, I believe the supplier is short changing them on food and space causing them to attack one another.

thats what I was going to say, it could have been due to over crowding and lack of food. But if they were "EXACTLY" the same length it could be genetics?

Makes you wonder if they are in fact eating each others tails due to lack of food, What are all these reptiles going through that they are selling. I would think this is a case for the S.P.C.A to investigate.

hmm... does it look like they could of got their tails caught in something, like a screen tank lid, crack in the aquarium, etc.? And what does this stores mouse pen look like? is it a crowded aquarium, large pen, rack system? Does it look like its cleaned often or is it dirty? Stress can cause mice to bite eachother. I know someone who had a tailless rat, they got it from a pet shop that way where it was kept in very crowded conditions. I doubt anyone would mutilate the mice... Or does anyone who works there look like they would be the type to mutilate mice? :medpuke:

i seen there mouse system and it is overcrowded 60 gallon tanks on the floor with about 100-150 mice per tank... i believe more now that they are over crowded and worse over crowded with other colony's mixed in as i know instinct they fight.(have tryed mixing 1 mouse from another colony many times and they gang up on him/her) I guess when i bred my mice i was more responsible. Today when i go get some mice i will drop them ALL my left over food from when i was breeding my own mice. Maybe just maybe they will get the message. Good thing we have a place like this to come post a question and actualy find answers and learn something along the way!!!

I am not sure why they don't have part of thier tails, they can fight and loose tails sometimes but usually they kill each other before biting off tails. I know we don't cut the tails of our mice.
