i built this over the course of 6 months, but it was in no way that complicated.. i just never had the time to spend on it. the sides and top are melamine shelving. the back and floors are shower board and the floor is supported with a 1" x 2" pine framework. i wanted to use the shower board to try and minimize the weight as well as decrease the chances of the off gassing i have heard about with heating melamine. it seems to have worked cause i carried up a flight of stairs by myself all constructed.

its hardboard, but one side is textured to look like tiles and has a water resistant, if not water-proof, finish. its kinda like a plastic covering. it's about 1/8" thick, maybe 3/16" and costs about $20 for a 4 x 8 sheet. it is perhaps a cheaper alternative, but i used it mostly as way to save weight.
