View Full Version : My baby boa - A sad story

My first baby I have had for a few months now. She was always pretty shaky but after having her for a little while she got even worse, and she started going into shed. To make matters worse she got stuck in her shed, at this time a new friend of mine came into the picture and having much more experiance with snakes she took my baby off to help her shead and try to get her oveall more healthy looking (she had become dehydrated at the same time)

So after we got the shead off, got her eating and hydrated we thought things might look up however she still was shaking and her tummy was getting softer and softer, to the point that it did not feel like she had any muscles.

So I called the vet, and of course the nearest one had to be quite a distance today. I just got back from the vet a few minutes ago, it happens to be that my baby has a rare neurlogical disorder called cerebellar hypoplasia...
In english is means if left she will slowly worsen untill she is completely paralized, as it is she is at the stage where she cannot poop on her own, which saddens me as this being the reason she has not gone in over a month after eating 5 times. And why she seems to have no muscles.

The vet informed me that there is no treatment and all that can really be done for her to be put down. I am very unhappy and upset I had waited so long to get my baby and did everything I could to keep her healthy and happy. Now she has to be put down.

The main reason for this post is because aside from my friend no one here cares about snakes at all, anyway here is a picture of my first baby.

That's too bad. Sorry to hear that. I hope you won't give up on snakes all together and give it another go with a new one?

I'm very sorry to hear about your baby. She looks pretty. I'm kind of in the same boat as you. Besides my brother inlaw and Simon, I have no one else that's into snakes. All my friends think I'm a crackhead for keeping them.

I think it'll be better if you get a new one, healthy without a rare disorder. BCI's are such beautiful animals.

Cheers,
Shane

Well I do have another baby. Shes 3 months in 100% health, she loves perching on the little log thing I have in with her, and she hates hiding away lol. She would perfer to just curl up on her log. My poor Circe is gone but Maia seems to be in great health.

The hardest thing with her is to get her to go back into her place. Shes in an aquarium right now untill I can get the heat rope shelves and the big enclosures built. I was told he would have time in a few months, but shes happy. I love them both, John wants me to get a ball, he hates snakes but I am slowly converting him. When we go to the show in sept (funds providing) thinking about a ball or a corn.

I love them all I just hate that Circe was so sick, and miss her now that shes gone.

I'm so sorry to hear about that. I love bci's, so stories like that are even worse than usual. It sounds like you did everything you could, so I guess it's just a sad learning experience. I'm glad to hear you have another that's healthy, and about your on going 'conversion' efforts. HAHA! Keep up the good work!

Sorry for both you and the snake. It's especially difficult to lose your first one :(

Hi Myna,
Glad to see you finally posting. ;) And again, I'm so sorry about the little one, wish I could have done more for you and her. :(
But you did everything you could, and everything right, I just wish that d*** pet store would stand up and take responsibility for it! I don't even buy supplies from them I hate them so much!!!
Hope you can make it to the September show and you can pick up your heat rope there for a good price. ;) I bet you wont leave without something slithering too. ;)

Talk to you soon, and remember I'm here when you need me.

Thank you everyone, its nice to hear from people who care, most here think I am nuts for getting a snake let alone being upset for loosing one.

Hi Deb, don't be sorry. We are seeing if we can't do something about the pet store and again thank you for everything. Oh and the other one I was so thrilled took F/T without issue, she grabbed it right away. Shes developing a habbit thats concerning me. She keeps just staring straight up. Shes flat against the glass just looking up almost to the top of her enclosure. I'm not sure if its just because shes used to a less tall enclosure that she can reach the top of, or something else.

We are gonna try to make it to the sept and thinking about seeing if we can't find a corn or a ball. John seems to like the balls. Talk to you soon

Myna, my boas stare up at the lid of the enclosure. I think they're pressed up on the glass/plastic because maybe it's cooler? I don't know, I was worried about it, and I posted a pic in another thread. Others assured me not too worry. Sounds kind of siimilar.

Ah okay, that could be possible, its been very hot this month in the apt, especially over the last few days (I only switched her to the aquarium a few days ago) its been hotter than I like for her. Thank you.
