Hi, i have a 22 inch dominant male columbian redtail boa (BCI). I have him in a 10 gallon enclosure right now. the guy at the pet store says he was the baby of a 13 foot female and 10 foot male. He said that he will be anywere from 7 feet - 12 feet in size. Does anyone know how much it will cost to make a 15ftX4ftX5ft cage???
Heres a pic this is not my snake but looks alot like him.

The snake looks awesome! Congrats on your grab.
As for the cage, based on my research (i'm currently building one for myself) a 6x2x2 that I'm making is going to be around 260 with everything included (glass, track, lock, wood). I'd think that a cage the size you're talking about will be closer to 650, as it's over double what I'm doing. The melamine isn't too bad in price, at least at Home Depot, but you're going to need several pieces, and then the doors (if you're going with sliding glass) are going to be pricy for something that size. My suggestion would be finalizing the size and design, and then going and costing the entire thing, which is what I did. I didn't think a colombian bci, even a red tail, would need something that size...figured it was only the giant pythons that would require something of those dimensions...but I could be wrong:) Either way, good luck, and I hope this helps a bit.

In my opinion, you really don't need to build something that big. If your boa is a male, it will probably only reach a length of between 6-8 feet. An enclosure that is 6 x 2 x 2 would be plenty big enough. If you wanted to add some extra space make it 2.5 feet deep. The size you are talking about would be plenty big enough to house a 15-18 foot burmese python that will wiegh considerably more than your male boa will.
As far as cost goes, I'm really not sure. I had 2 - 4x2x2 emclosures built and they cost me $450 for both.
Nice looking snake, and good luck with the construction.

13 foot female and a 10 foot male.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiight.
You have no idea how many times we've heard that in the reptile community. I remember a time when someone here posted an ad for an 11 foot male boa that wasn't even as big as the person holding it. Don't believe what you hear from pet stores, especially with far fetched stories like that. Boas VERY rarely exceed 8 feet, even for females.
Anyway, the cage dimensions you spelled out there are bigger than you would need for a RETIC, much less a male boa. A 6x2x2 cage is all you will ever need, and if you build it yourself, could cost anywhere from $60 to $200, depending on the materials you select.

A snake over 13 feet is what i am talking about
And a want a answer to what is best for me
i have had 8 years of experience. 3 with boa 3 with garters i with corns and 1 with king
i was not lucky with the king because he died because of a hunger strike a corn because she just gave up. 2 years with garters had a desiese from a bad worm or pinkie mouse and 1 year with boa because of internal tumor the was in the middle of the tachea so he couldnt eat. waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
two years good with boas well that is one boa and i have a new one now a gorgeous columbian red tail male . :jawdrop: i also currently have a 3 foot garter snake that was wild caught she has a mean bite toward the fish, and the mice.
its meaner to the mice because its something you can just eat alive. blood every where when a mouse is eaten! :medyell: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :medangry: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead: :meddead:

well i agree with most of what was said.. but if you dont want a ball, dont get one..
second your telling a 29 year old person that has an extreem amount of knowledge what size enclosure he needs.. may i add as far as ive read he doesnt believe in "minimum dimensions"
third rectic in capticity DOES NOT NEED a 20x5 enclosure.. and your boa definatly doesnt need 15x4 cage espically with 5 feet of hight.... thats just rediculas...its nice your trying to give him more than enough room.. but it just makes things more dificult.. do a nice 6x2.5x2 enclosre and youll be fine
but most of all.. listen to the ppl on here man... they know what there talkin about.

8x3x3 is fine just remember that more room means more cleaning.. and 3 feet youlll have a hard time gettin in doors.. lol.. id say either 7x2x2 or 6.5x3x2.. but once again 6x2.5 or 3 would be more than enough...
as for large snakes you may want top wait till your boa reaches full size and you get a little larger yourself.. a snake that size can do serious damage and will weigh more than you.. at your age ( and my estimate of size) you may be mentally able to handle such a large snake but not phycially.. im nearing 20, im 5'10" and 165 pounds and feel that im not large enough to handle such a creature.. so i had to turn down taking in a 13 foot female burm..
i know nothing about large snakes but my guess would be a burm.. arent they a little smaller than the others listed??? maybe easier to handle.. or even just another boa.. there not a small snake either..

well i was saying when i can support food and needs by my self (when i am 25 years old) and i was thinking a anaconda because all over the internet they have people that had a green anaconda since it was a babie and that they are just the sweetest thing(except at feeding time of coarse) lol. and i heard that they only need a 25 by 4 by 3 foot cage if you want to have one of those special pond tpe water areas or just a 20 by 4 by 3 foot cage. thats why i said that a retic would need a cage that big.
i wish i had money like the zoo so i can really have large and joyful enclosures fr large snakes. If you're going to wait until you're 25 years old until you get a giant, you've got a lot of years ahead of you to decide what you want and what would be best for you. I'm 6'7" and weigh 230 lbs and I'm even questioning my ability to handle an 18 foot snake by myself.
Even a snake that seems tame is not necessarily tame. I've got a boa that has been very tame and last week got pissy and struck at me. Never got me, but sure tried.
You'll probably haveyour hands full at your age with a 5 foot boa in a year or 2. Best of luck with it though. A 4 x 2 x 2 emclosure is planty big enough for a male boa to.

Why dont you worry about building this big cage for your boa before thinking about another large boid......6x2x2 is plenty.
If you really are 11...I'm not trying to discourage you but not only will feeding a boa that will get "7-12ft" going to cost a ton.....but how can you afford food for a larger boid also? I'm not trying to put you down or anything at all, just trying to point out some things to keep in mind.
Reading your post you obviously do not sound mature enough for a reptile, you are eleven years old, how do you plan to care for a reptile of this size? I highly doubt you are posting in regards to a snake which you are purchasing in over 10 years. Stop it with the smilies.

what i am saying is when i am older and can offord more than one large boid what could be a good pick.
and i love my animals i clean cages every 3 days a get clean water that is sterilized every day i even go to the extent of well... whats the word for it . any way i have raised boas be fore and had some luck with them growing them to 8 feet in 2 years. only feeding them a jumbo rat every 2 weeks. it died the day i was going to have to swith to rabbits. i know what it is like to care and andle large boas from the age of 8 - 10 i had boas
and a corn that i dont know what happened. well one day he was regurgitating water and i call the vet andhe said it was normal so i belleived him next day the snake was dead> king refused to eat for me. so i currently have a 2 + year old 3 foot garter snake and a one month old 22inch columbian red tail boa dominant male.

Dude where are you geting these numbers 25 foot cages and such.
I don't care how knowlegable you think you are no army of Atoms or pirates will save you from any of the above listed animals when they decide to go ape s$#!T on you.
You're sitting in a 25 foot cage with a 15 foot snake. I will bet big money that you will get yours handed to ya on a plate.
Keep your snakes in proper manageable cages I have worked with 12 X 2 X 1,5 cages and that was more than enough space needed.
An 8 foot female Boa can live comfortably in a 4 X 2 X 1,5 and a 6 foot male can live just fine in a properly sized Rubbermaid.
I could see if you were a Zoo and had that kind of space and was trained to move around such a large cage without looking like prey. LOL!!
Maybe then such a large cage would be good.
Wait till you are at least 20. Leave the big snakes alone you will get yourself or a loved one hurt or worst killed by your lack of experience. When you are 20 your Boas will be quite large and you will have an Idea of how big a Giant can truely be.
In closing I will not suggest any of the listed giants for you as a starter and I encourage the rest of the community to follow my example. Get some Jungle Carpet Pythons, Brazilian Rainbow Boas, Hog Island Boas get into ball python morphs slowly you have the time and in time you will Have the money.

there is NO WAY you are ready for a giant. IMO youre not even ready for a boa. you can not treat any snake over five foot as being a "pet" and "tame". they can be nice one day and total monsters the next day. it looks like the past snakes you have kept that you say have given you "experience" werent very healthy. now im not saying you were the cause of their unhealthiness but i think you should first see if you can keep your boa and garter snake healthy for a while before you even think about breeding anything. just my $0.02.

ok. should i just keep doing live for my bos because it takes forever when i try f/t and i can barley get the mouse in the cage when it is alive. plus live is alot cheaper where i live
Reticsrule
07-13-05, 08:21 PM
i would definetly feed f/t if it will take it. just get a f/t mouse/rat and dangle it in front of your boa's face(not with your hands of course) to aggitate it and it should take it. live may be cheaper but the rodent could end up harming your boa.
BallPythonLover
07-13-05, 08:30 PM
it takes me for ever to get it to eat f/t
only once did he take it and it was because obviously he would not eat f/t when he was there and said he would eat it. and know i tred a jumbo adult mouse and he ate it the minute i got it in the got and it moved around, also would it be better to give it a place to eat instead of the acual enclosure?not once did he not take live and only once did he take f/t and it was because he was starving/ i dont want to starve m snake to make it eat one meal. any way tomorrow is his feeding so i will hop to have a reply. i also dont want to have to force feed my snake it is very stess ful for the snake and me, i have not done it with my boa but i have with m corn snake who would take anything put in its mouth ( most of the time)
and whats eqal to a adult mouse (rat wise) because i dont want to start of 2 big!
It is best to put the snakes in a 'feeding box' during feeding time, which is just a simple box with no substrate and large enough for the snake to obviously move around. Give your snake time; if he has eaten f/t before thats great, though you should have not gone back to live prey. One of these days your snake is probally going to be seriously injured by one of these rodents during feeding, and it will be something you regret. Snakes can go a very long period of time with out food (though not healthy), you need to get him on a f/t diet. Wouldnt you want the best for your snake?
Ok look, if you don't have the time or patience to do your boa a favor and do what is best for him then don't talk about getting other snakes. When someone says something like "it takes me for ever to get it to eat f/t" makes me put them on the 'I will never buy anything living from them' list. If he took it once then he will take it again, also this so-called boa is only 1 month old...there should be NO talk about force feeding. This is ludacris...how long did you "starve" your snake if he is a month old??? LOL. You need to take a break and read about these animals which you have not done if you are asking all these questions:
"also would it be better to give it a place to eat instead of the acual enclosure?"
"whats eqal to a adult mouse"
"And a want a answer to what is best for me"
"but would a 8 x 3 x 3 foot cage to big?"
"well one day he was regurgitating water and i call the vet andhe said it was normal so i belleived him next day the snake was dead"
This is a great place to learn but these are questions a RESPONCIBLE animal owner should already know! How can anybody take you seriously or even try to help if these are the questions you are asking after 8 so-called years of experience...and who lets a 3 year old have snakes of there own?
Start reading and be patient...if you don't have the patience to help your animal then everybody is going to know you are a typical irresponcible snake owner who needs to mature. And your quote "Never question a reptile. They know best" is not the truth...

i didnt know that the snake in question was only a month old. if this is the case then there is NO WAY that you are starving this boa. give it some time. my friend has a ball python that was eating f/t just fine then went off feed for 8 months before he ate again(not that this is healthy but the snake didnt die).

Im 21, 6'6 and 250 pounds and i find it a little bit of a hand full when im helping some of my herp friends with there burm's and retic's, and would really like to know where your getting these dimensions from because they are way to big( get a tape measure and measure out 25 feet i can guarantee you dont really realize how big that really is!!)Stick with a ball python

my corn snake would sometimes go into a quick shedd and its eyes didnt turn blue.
when my boa doesnt eat for some reason could it be that its in a shedd but doesnt have the blue eyes. or is it that it is not hungrey or some thing.
Would freshly killed be better than f/t because it still has the strong scent????

and whats eqal to a adult mouse (rat wise) because i dont want to start of 2 big!
i have feed live to my boas before one live aand the other f/t the one that ate live grew faster and had alot nicer skin which i care alot about because that is the o9nly way I can see if something was wroung.. but then it was only a year of comparison because the one died from a tumor in the tachea and i didnt want to have to spend 100's and find out it doesn live! so i put her down. :(
DO you think it matters if it is live or frozen/thawed? A mouse is a mouse is a mouse, have you ever eaten a steak that was frozen at one point? A steak is a steak...a mouse is a mouse and a rat is a rat...because you believe live is best what are you gonna do when it eats large rats/rabbits? Switch it then...come on. Stop with all the stories about the snake had better skin when it ate live. Listen to what people say or shut it...you can't ask a question that you already think you have the answer to...because all your doing is arguing with everybodies input. Do more reading and less posting for a while...these questions you are asking have been posted 100's of times...put some time in and find them!
And stop tripple posting.
Dude, seriuosly you need something you can handle.A rectic or any other large snake is (in my own opinon) too much for you to handle right now.I have a bci, bp, and corn snake.Bci are really fun to have.As far as an enclosure size,i'm building a 5x3x2 enclosure for my bci. That will be plenty of room for him.If you want to get something bigger as far as a snake and a cage do so when your a little older.

K.
sorry to cause you guys all the trouble. its just that well my mom hates snakes and she didnt even really want me to get a boa methier did my dad. he suggested to get a ball python but i told him that they were trouble feeders which is all i have heard is that they are troble feeder finicky will only eat if it has the exact everything wereas boas are thetype f snakes that will eat anything readily and he takes f/t but only if i constantly jiggle it around. and as i have said that he takes a live once it starts moving. and by the way i heard that it is easier to get them on f/t when they are adults, is that true

look if your parrents didnt want you to get a boa... you shouldnt have.. but thats besides the point.. get on f/t rats asap.... go buy a book... look on websites.. ect ect..
i hate to break it to ya but you know NOTHING about your boa there... and you really need to.. you MUST do reasearch ASAP.. your little buddy there is gonna get to 7 or 8 feet in no time.. bigger than you,.... your not going to be able to handle his strength.. so youll need your dad there when you wanna hold him, no matter how tame you get him.. hes still an animal..
here start with this site..
http://www.redtailboas.com/general_care/general_care.html
but buy a book and read like 20 more sites/..
and i hope for your sake your parrents are forgiving.. cause your gonna need alot of help when he grows up a little...
oh ya and use the edit post feature.. if you need to add something its easy.. just a tip...

no buddy.. dont worry.. honestly i dont want you to feel like you should never ask a question.. you should.. i just also want you to do some reasearch to see what questions can be answered before you post.. as well, if your not sure some of your info is correct, no harm in asking..
reasearch takes some time but youll have a healthier and happier snake because of it

when i have the bigger cage set up would heat tape be a good source of heat or what
peterm15
07-15-05, 11:52 AM
yes heat tape with a dimmer or a better choice a helix temprature comtroll would work.. use the money your saving from not building a massive cage and but the helix...
and i couldnt answer the feeding question.. i dont own any constrictors.. but if he ate he ate..
make sure the mouse is fully thawed and dry before you feed.. and try to switch to rats

no one in my area has rats
1. nothing that is big enough to eat them
2. no one out here wants rats for any reason
3.the place i got my snake from was 45 minutes a way.
and for the reason i have with the live thing is they have been feeding live to it for its whole life so i am haing difficulty getting it to eat.
so should i just stick to live until he gets onto adult rats and then change him to f/k or f/t

kferrari that is hitting below the belt man. I have a hard time to spell and I have worked in places you would only wish you could go and visit. You dont have to have all your academic credits to keep snakes. I am living proof.
fish3x3 just chose the general area you want to be in and select start new thread at the right hand side of the page.

ok bud , here you go , if your gonna wait till your 25 to get this "big" snake , then you have lots of time to figure things out on your own , we all have no problem helping people figure things out but that is something you need to figure out on your own ....ciao bro

I think what he meant by 8 yrs of experience is he had a boa, a corn, kingsnake and gartersnake all at once but maybe in different interverals like 2 at once or 3 at once, etc. Now, 15ft would be gigantic for a 7-8ft snake and the snake probably wouldnt use that whole cage constantly. Besides that it would cost more time then you want to spend to clean the cage. Heh, i think I heard him say he has experience in holding an 8ft snake??? Maybe it was all bad luck with his earlier reptiles but he could be lying to cover it up, "Kingsnake on a hunger strike"??? Doesnt sound right to me! Common Boas the least finiky? I have heard kingsnakes to be the most voracious and will eat anything. A Common boa is definatley gonna be to big of a snake for you (its gonnabe like 5 ft in 2 yrs) and definatley a 13 yr old cant handle that! This is what I have to say. I think you should sell it (you may lose money) buy a kingsnake or cornsnake and try that again because with all your stupid questions you could obviously read in a book/website you did minimum/basic researching or none. Dont even talk about breeding because your only 11.... Pffft... your already adding your money after you havent even made it probably. Im 75% sure the boa will die of something in the next year, but who knows.... Come back when you got your facts straight plz!

well i was saying when i can support food and needs by my self (when i am 25 years old) and i was thinking a anaconda because all over the internet they have people that had a green anaconda since it was a babie and that they are just the sweetest thing(except at feeding time of coarse) lol. and i heard that they only need a 25 by 4 by 3 foot cage if you want to have one of those special pond tpe water areas or just a 20 by 4 by 3 foot cage. thats why i said that a retic would need a cage that big.
i wish i had money like the zoo so i can really have large and joyful enclosures fr large snakes. ( mabe iw ill start one beggining with a flea circus then a boa zoo then a large snake zoo then a zoo, and i will be filthy rich.Lol :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom:
