Real Plants in Aquarium OK?

Hey, I was thinking about sticking a plant in with my snake, just wondering if any of you know if there's anything that'll make the snake sickin the soil,.. obviously regular soil shouldn't harm them too much cause in the wild they would have to deal with it all the time,.. but i took this soil out of a top soil bag, think it'll be ok?

Yeah I think it would be O.K, Its going to be hard to have a plant in a Aquarium beacuse its not going to have fresh air flow. Temps you would have to get a plant that would be acustomed to temps of a snakes cage.

My vet actually suggested using live plants, to help with humidity. The only problem is finding plants that will do well in the heat (and light, if you use a light source). I had a jade plant still in the pot in there for a while, it did nicely, until my guy decided to try crawling around on it and broke the leaves off. So look for something that will do well in high heat and will be sturdy enough for your snake's weight if they decide to explore. :)

pothos all the way! i have always used them over years of owning herps. iv had them in all different kinds of cages with different temps and humidity. they do well with snakes too. the plants tend to wind around things a bit so they always look really nice stretched out wraped around hides and stuff. very hard for a herp to damage it unless its a lizard eating it but definetly wont have to worry about that with snakes. if it starts to get too long just cut off some peices. if you want, you can put the peices in a cup of water and soon the will have roots-more pothos. most of them look the same but some look different and almost have patterns on the leaves. if you keep them waterd-you will keep it alive, iv never had to water any of mine more than once a week, most of the time i do less than that.

thanx a lot, yea i've got a plant that'll do the trick and it's in a really sturdy pot with a water tray, i just wanted to make sure that the snake would be ok first.. i'll look into those pothos

I agree with the pothos! Looks great, indestructible, strong. I've used it for everything from chameleon cages, semi-aquatic terrariums, to having one growing down a cabinet in my office right now.

One more tip if you're keeping live plants in an aquarium...keep the plants in their pots! It makes the plant keeping MUCH more simple and easy.

agreed! iv tried with different kind of plants. i wanted to see if they would grow inside the cage and look more natural without the pot. it never worked, they always die or i almost die and i have to take them out and help them back to life.

read if there are any toxins in the soil just incase cuz if it says that it might harm a child then chances are good that it would harm you
