Okay, so i have a bar fridge i want to make into an incubator. I have asked about it before, but I am still as lost as ever. I guess my real problem is i don't wanna spend all the cash that i should to do it right.

I know of the no-substrate method Jeff raves about, but i was looking for something a little more permenant. The eggs i am waiting on will have to go this route though, no way i can get the parts and assemble before the eggs arrive.

Is there no easily aquired, low priced thermostat that will do the trick???

I simply can't afford a helix, $225 is too rich for my blood. I don't expect to be profiting what so ever out of my meger breeding attempts, so thats doesn't make much sense for me. I understand herpstats are a little cheaper, but still probably more then i want to spend. Is there a big quality difference though? IF one of these is my only reasonable option i guess i will go that way, and just wait till i get the $$$.

Does anybody know where i can get a heating element from a hovabator? will that work? Or should i just stick with 4" heat tape.

Lastly, where can i buy the heattape and thermostat in Canada if need be. I have heard of mgreptiles, lllreptiles, beanfarm, etc but none of which are in Canada. I don't wanna get raped at the border with stupid fees. what was the shipping costs like when you ordered form one of these places? Does Matt K have a webpage? any other suggestions?

I guess what i really want to know is do i really have to spend $400 for a dry incubator?

Get a sumersible fishtank heater, I'd go with a 100 watt. put it in a big pickle jar filled with water set the temp poke a hole or two in the lid of the pickle jar and then put the hole thing in the fridge and then fine tune the temp of the underwater heater till you have the right temp.
This might take a few days and will probably give you a few degrees variance either way from your ideal temps. I found most eggs can handle a swing of 2 degrees either way.
if one tank heater is'nt cutting it buy anotherand put it in its own jar.
The down side to this other than not having exact temps is it takes up a lot of space, but this is how the old boys used to do it and sum still do.
