finally! tentacled snakes!

i finally have my favorite snakes in the world. i got them from some awesome guys at a reptile expo today. he said hes had them for a while and is sure they are healthy and there eating like crazy. they are both so pretty, im over flowing with joy. i got their tank set up and put some drift wood in it for them. its only a 10 gallon tank but im hoping to move them into a 20 or even a 35 gallon. the guy told me to keep the water in the 80s and keep acidity high. im going to buy a water test kit too and iv never used one before, i could actually take samples to the pet store and they test your water free but i figured it would be easier to do it myself. could any one tell me what pH is best for tentacles? im guessing around 8 something. if any one has any extra info they would like to add please do. in the past few years iv gotten as much info on them as i can from the internet which really isnt a whole lot but i do know alot about them and extra info would be great. heres a pic of the tank, before the filter and the snakes were put in. a picture of the snakes will be in my gallery. wish me luck!

its just the tank, i added in my post that thats all it was, i took the pic before i put the snakes in there. if i took a picture now you probably still wouldnt see them. they are clinging to the drift wood and are just about the same colors.

i just want to know if it looks alright for a little while anyways. i want to put them in something bigger with more sticks and things to cling to.

Hey what part of maryland??...i live in toronto but im down there atleast once a year......baltimores very cool....its got the Aquarium,,, and almost a diffeerent fish store in every plaza.....not like that hear tho..and have you ever been to 2001 fish oddisy

Wow, those are definatly somthing different to a collection. Are those male, female? Very neat stuff..more pics whould be cool too!

wow those are awesome, an aquatic tank would be very cool, can you house 2 together? Are they shy, can they be in an area to display them that would get lots of traffic?

Adamrivers- i live basicaly right next to baltimore, its about a 5 minute drive there if not less. i love the aquarium, i go atleast once a year and have been my whole life. though one of my favorite parts was the sea horses and my friend who volunteers there said they moved to italy =\ there doing some awesome stuff there now, puting in a huge part dedicated to australian animals- fish, reptiles, birds, every thing. wont open till later this year though.

thanks every one else for the comments, i really love them so much. its REALLY hard geting good pictures of them! and i dont want to take photo shoots too often because i want them to be as less stressed as possible. i did get a good picture of the dark one though. i have no idea i they are male or female though it would be awesome if they were and be AWESOME if they bred.

every time i see them theres always more than one. at zoos and even the lucky people who get to own them they always have atleast 2 or a whole group. i guess they just dont mind each other, they just want to cling to branches and chill, though sometimes they sit close to each other. they seemed fine at the zoo when i saw them in washington DC, they were swimming around or clinging to the branches so im sure they would be fine being on display and having alot of people observe them as long as no one is poking at them or something.

in a few days i might try to take some more pictures or ill wait till feeding time which should be great.

if the water is supposed to be acidic I believe you want it under pH 7 rather than over

Yeh under 7 is acidic, any thing over is alkaline, im not sure but i dont think the tentacle snakes, take too well to very hard water.... but im not too sure, Anyways very cool

ok thanks, i was thinking 8 because at the pet store we kept our african cichlids at 8. i never knew much about them but over heard the other employees that did know alot about them told customers 8 was the best for them, so im not even sure why i conected them with tentacled snakes but yeah, my bad. im going to take a water sample to the pet store and hope some one i know there can show me how to test it and we can find out what my pH is now.

iv found quite a bit more info on them then i knew before which is great! very vital info as well. i figured i'll post it for any one interested in knowing a little more about them.

most of them dont live longer than a few months after they are purchased, almost every time they die of skin infections. this also goes for elephant trunk snakes. the body is coverd in white lesions and they dont live long after that. this is from the water quality. although algae has been known to benefit them. if there is algae growing in the tank, it helps their skin. puting a light on the tank will help with the algae growth and also better than an aquarium heater. the water doesnt need to be in the 80s, 70s are best. pH should be around 6. other than water quality the set up doesnt need to be any thing special other than making sure they have branches to cling to (which is just about all they do) live plants and things can be added, probably makes the snakes feel safer as well. as for food they can be fed rosies, guppies and shiners which can be bought at pet stores/bait shops. when they eat (and this is what iv read, i havnt fed them yet) is the only time there really fast, they are also rear fanged and have a mild venom. these snakes can reach 3 feet in length and readily breed and produce live young.

i got really scared today and thought i saw a white thing on the top of the ones head but he was just sheding! it made me very happy, it was all in one soaking wet peice that i very carefully pulled apart, hardest part was the head and the little tiny tentacles. i plan on framing the skin because who knows how long ill have them.
