I Have a beardie at the moment, its my 1st lizard but i am looking to expand my collection. What would be a better beginers lizard? I was thinking a Crested Gecko or A leopard one but i dont like the way the tail on a leopard gecko looks. I know they are friendly and great lizards because my friend has A Leo but i am not convinced look wise. Are There any other kinds of beginer lizards that dont grow bigger then a leopard gecko that i can get because i have limited tank space in my room curently

omg get a flipping leo or another beardie......crested geckos are not hadleable if your looking for a chilled lizard. as for the size matter i find that some of the bigger lizards are easier to care for but u need more space especialy herbivours but what ever thats just one guys opinion

ignore the posts by spotnick, any1 know what kind of lizard would be good?!?!
your not going to find many easy to care for and easy to handle lizards as small as or smaller than a leopard gecko, they really are THE best small lizards but if you dont like the look then no one should try and push you to get one. if you really want another lizard then you'll have to make room for it. some lizards that stay a decent size and are both easy to care for and handle are chinese water dragons, blue tongue skinks, one thats a bit more chalenging care wize (but still pretty easy) is a urmostyx.
a beardie is a great beginner and if youv got the hang of it and do ALOT of research i think all the above lizards would be ok.
A great beginner lizard is an anole ;)
anoles are very easy to care for but not for handling.

It comes down to what appeals to you. We have DOZENS of cresties, and 2 Asian Water Dragons. If your calm and persistent a crestie can be handleable. Not quite so much as a Leo, (cresties are a little jumpy) but they do calm down after getting used to it. If you want a shoulder friend and can spare the space Water Dragons are the way to go. Both of mine love to sit and watch T.V. curled up on my arm. On the other Hand they can reach in excess of 3 feet in length. The best advice I can give you is to go with what you feel comfortable with, and make sure that you can provide the proper habitat and care for whatever you choose.

thanks every1, how big of a tank do blue tounge skinks need i really like them i saw them at a reptile store a few times
i just did a google search and looking at about 6 or 7 different care sheets the average size says 40-55 gallon aquarium. i would say something about 2 feet wide and 3 feet long would be fine for the average sized blue tongue.

Have you considered a colerd lizard they are easy to care for...same as a beardie. They are not as easy to handle but they are very active and the males have the most beautiful colours. IMO they are going to be the next big pet. Iam sure one of those would fair well in your 30g do some resurch I am sure you will like these guys!

I got a question for u all.... do you think that it is a good idea to start off with your first pet lizard with a lepoard gecko? i love lizards and i wanted to know...
my first reptile was a leo... then a crested.. (perfectly handelable) a pair of viper geckos, a day gecko( fast and fragile) and then a blue poison frog, and a trio of bumblebee poison frogs!! Definetly dont rule out cresteds... they are beautiful and it is great watching them hunt...

Snake Goddess,
Yes a leo or an African fat tail are very simple to care for first time lizzards. They do not requre much and are very hardy. And easy to handle without much work! There are so many after that but with each one comes a little more experiance. What ever you decide just make sure you do your home work first!

If you like skinks but don't have more than a 30 gallon tank for room how about a schnieder's skink? a.k.a. Berber skink. I have one, they are great! They get used of handling and are not as big as blueys (which I also have, 9 of them). A 30 gallon would be great for a Schneider's and you could make a little heaven for him. :)

Oh and forgot to mention another plus, they are like 1/4 the price of bluey's. ;) About 40-60 dollars in pet stores. They are hard to find c.b but as long as it looks healthy and alert you should be fine. We love ours. I'd like to get a couple more some day. ;)

I know Grant had some not long ago, maybe if he doesn't have any at the show he still has some at the store. You could always ask. ;) Other than him I've never seen any at the shows but I know that Roy breeds them and his babies would be awesome!!

I know you say you don't have room for a blue tongued skink, but I'll tell you I think they are the best beginner lizards. I've had my bluey for over 5 years and have been keeping leo's for 7 years and my personal opinion is bluey's are actually easier and less time consuming than leo's. With all the bugs for leo's and having to care for them, it just makes more work. My bluey is much easier. And they have great personalities!!!
