Soil or Live Substrates

I was wondering if soil would be an alright substrate or something else that gives a nice natural look? any ideas?

Potting soil or peat moss are great substrates. Just make sure they are pure, with no chemical insecticides or herbicides.

alright, are there any down sides I should know about besides mold?

Peat moss does not mold very easily at all. When you put it in the enclosure, just pack it down nice and tight - this will not only make it so that your snake isn't covered in dirt all the time, but it will also make it more likely that you'll be able to spot mold on the surface. Spot clean it, give it a full change out every couple of weeks, and you should be fine if you're not trying to maintain high humidity. What will you be housing?

My Jungle corn, the reason I asked is because im wanting to add alot of plants. also I use carpet and thats really a pain to clean everytime the snake soils it.

Ugh, especially a colubrid... they are absolute poop factories, and I agree - cleaning the carpet constantly is a pain.

I don't recommend live plants though - bear in mind the snake will poop anywhere it can. What are you going to do to clean and sterilize a natural plant? Nothing that won't kill it. Fake plants are the only way to go. But the soil substrate is still a very good substrate.

can u also use soil for pythons or would that cause a problem
