Pinkie Pop (Warning! Very graphic.)

I've heard of this happening with microwaved rodents but I thaw mine out in warm water. Well, I was feeding my baby BCI the other day and he squeezed the pinkie so hard that it burst open, spilling its guts. He went on to swallow it but it was pretty gross. The pictures speak for themselves:

ive never fed frozen before, just prekilled, but i was thinking about keeping some frozen, does that happen often when the rodents are frozen then thawed?

It happens when you give a boa constrictor a pinky. A boa should never even know what a pinkie looks like. I got some last year that were literally only days old, and I got them established - on HOPPERS, not pinkies. If you're paranoid, go with fuzzies. Pinkies will explode almost every time if you feed them to a boa, and that includes rat pinks.

thanks, i got my suriname two days ago and they told me that he's about 6 or 7 weeks old, but they were feeding him live fuzzies, but i wanted to swtich him over to prekilled, and that just looked like something im not sure i wanna clean up every time. he's about 22-23 inches and pretty thin, but you think he can handle hoppers already?

The breeder that I got him from said he was on rat pinks. I only have a few pinks left to finish off anyway. I've already got the fuzzies and weanlings in the freezer.

Trippy - at 22-23 inches, it should be on adult mice, easily. My boas got hoppers only for their first 4 meals - then up to adult mice right away, and that was when they were far less than 23 inches.

i have a common boa and its only a foot and a half and it squezzes an adult mouse hard enough that blood pours out of its mouth......... so an exploding pinkie is not a real shocker considering that they are one of the strongest snakes and even as baby they are incredible strong for their size

I agree with Invictus on the part about pinkies not needing to know what a pinkie is. Rat pups are a great starter IMO.

i agree, no pinkies for boas. though about 3 times iv had adult mice explode, my bci did it twice and one time i had a ball burst a mouse open. the ball would not eat the mouse but both times the bci ate the spilled out guts along with the mouse. i think those perticular mice had been in the freezer a VERY very long time and were just very old. i try to keep every thing better seald up now in bags and if they even look too old to me i will throw them out. i just dont want my snakes eating them and i dont want any more explotions, they arnt so fun.

A baby boa can be started with baby rats.A pinky is way to small for him.You need to switch him over to baby rats.

i got him a fuzzie rat and he wanted nothing to do with it. he would smell it , look like he was going to stike, but then he just went right past it, i left him there with it for a good two hours, but there seemed to be no interest. i saw his feeding chart from the place that i got him, and he was on 1 fuzzy rat every 6 days, so i dont think he's a problem feeder. do you think it's just cause i dont want to feed him in his encloser and he's not used to being moved to feed? or do you know of anything else that could be promoting this?
