I have 2 Columbian Red Tailed Boas. I only want 1 of them. I've been trying to sell for sometime at $110 or best offer. Is this just too much, or are they next to impossible to get rid of? It's a year old and female. Any ideas? Suggestions? You can e-mail me at i_daddy4ever@yahoo.com if you like. I live in Ohio.

Probably because you are advertising on a predominantly CANADIAN website. Shipping to Canada is going to be over $250-300 after CITES and all that jazz. No one's going to pay $410 for a normal Boa. Try advertising in your local paper, go to a reptile show, sell it to a pet store, etc etc etc.

I've went to a petstore, they said too big. I've put up fliers and put in paper. No luck, this has been going on for a good month or more.

Find a breeder that is in need of more females.

the newspaper might work well. find out if you can advertise at the pet store, that might work too. if youv put her on other websites, iv noticed alot of websites that let people advertise what their selling also alow people to advertise what they want and i have seen on many of them-people looking for bcis. if you really want her gone lower the price and if you desperatly want her gone maybe give her to a rescue (or if your near me i might take her lol)

Or try faunaclassifieds.com . That's primarily American, and I think the ads are free.

Also was curious, I want to move the one I keep into a bigger home. Is a 99 gallon aquarium big enough for the majority of a boa's lifespan? Yes, no? Is it also economical compared to other choices? Thanks for reading.

How much would shipping be on something like that? Maybe we could split shipping costs, and I could just charge $100 on the snake to cut you a bit of a break? You can e-mail me if you like at i_daddy4ever@yahoo.com

Shipping overseas is even more expensive than shipping across the Can/US border. You have to deal with the high cost of shipping, which may include several different flights to get there, as well as arranging inspections, aquiring import and export permits, etc.

Like was mentioned above, try some of the free US classfieds. You can also contact the reptile shows in your area to see if they offer alternatives to full tables for people with only one or two items/animals to sell. If not, you can use it as a way to meet boa breeders... many boa breeders keep their eyes out for adult females. Like Jeff said, try looking for them. You could even look in directories or through large classifieds and web sites of breeders, and email them to find out if they are interestested, or know anyone that might be. Good luck selling your snake.

Thanks for the advice. If I attend the show, (I've never been to one, sorry), could I just walk around w/the snake around my neck? Is that a no-no? Would I just keep it in the car? Any info is appreciated. Thanks for reading.

i have seen people do that in columbus but bring a pillow case or apropriate sized bag to put it in.

Definitely a no-no. That is an accident waiting to happen in your home, inconsiderate to others around you at a show (as well as potentially dangerous), and stressful to your snake. You will need to check your local show regulations, many shows only allow vendors animals, etc. to be there for regulatory reasons, as well as it is unfair to those people who pay to sell their animals, which is why I suggest you inquire about half-tables and such.

I agree with Linds on that as well.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm a newbie, so I won't know if I don't ask, right? I have another question, if I bring the snake in a pillow case, what is the protocol (sp?) as for how long they can be left in a pillow case? Is a few hours too long (driving to the show and back)? Also, if I put them in there, are they likely to strike while removing? Is there any certain safety considerations I should take or anything inparticular I should know about when putting them in a pillow case? Thanks for reading.

Sorry, also forgot to ask this, are reptile shows suitable for children? Are there things they would even want to see there? My 9 year old son really wants to go, and just wanted to know if it would be something he would enjoy or not. Thanks again.

We have a free classified at www.venomousreptiles.org. sign up and try there. we have a pretty good sell rate. I wouldn’t even bother with a reptile show. Your snake is so common, many venders will be offering them and you will not be able to compete with the price. You probably have more invested in food for your snake then you can get back out of it. If you continue to have no luck getting cash out of it, offer to trade it to a retail shop for like $100 worth of mice for your other snake. It would be a win/win situation. The shop probably has about 100% mark up, so they are getting the snake for about $40 to $50 of their investment and you are going to have to buy them anyway.

I just bought 3 bags of frozen rats for about $1 a piece, so I really don't need the trade in now, especially since the local pet stores charge $3 a rat, live or frozen.

perhaps trade in for store credit toward a larger tank or something of that nature. People love boas, so if you are not pressed for cash, just sit on it. it will eventually sell.

There are always lots of kids at the All Ohio Reptile Show in Columbus. Lots of things to look at. I've also seen lots of people who carry snakes in their arms or on their shoulders. If I were you, I'd talk to the vendor that's always straight ahead as you come in the doors. He's a heavy fellow and always has lots of young boas and bps. He might be able to direct you as to going about selling your boa.

good luck!

I might see you there!

I posted this up higher in the thread, but didn't get an answer, so wanted to post again here:

There was a time when people used to HOUSE snakes in pillowcases ;) Each snake will respond differently to be taken out of or put in to a pillowcase, as well as they are being put in to a whole new environment when you take them out which can be unsettling for even the calmest snake.

e burna
05-16-05, 03:18 PM
So what you're saying is I need to be extrememely careful when taking them out of the pillow case?

Linds
05-16-05, 03:38 PM
It will be much worse if you hesitate, which usually what ends up happening with most people when they are trying to be 'extremely careful' :p Hesitation will unerve an already frightened snake... they won't know what to make of the big scary human looming over them trying to pick them up. Just use common sense... don't open the bag up, look at the snake, then stick your hand in it's face or anything. Be quick, decisive, and observe proper handling technique ;)

snakes are individuals, and all will react differently. my bull snake hates pillow cases, and even gives me a hard time when i put him in a rubber maid to feed.
