View Full Version : Why no Europe?

Ive noticed that europeans dont visit this site, which is strange because in so many places, they have very small homes, and have to keep smaller animals like frogs and those littler lizard dudes(anoles?) Anyway, I wondered if the makers of this site have ever thought of putting other languages on here, or language converters?

How did you come to the conclusion that Europeans don't visit this site? I'm aware of at least a decent handful that are members.

well, I mean in the volume...If you look under the classifieds section, it says "Never" under "Posted". Im sorry if I offeded you, I meant like as many as americans or canadians. There are so many languages over there, I just wondered why there wasnt a diferent language available on this site

Actually if they do not know about the site it will be 1 reason, other is internet and some using dial up ain' t cheap like in North America..............the phone system alone in most of Europe ain' t cheap literally each call is a cost let alone being online via dial up. That is a big reason why some families rather have 3 - 5 cell phones instead of 1 land line, believe it cell phones are cheaper but over all things are just expensive over there.

We do have quite a few members from overseas, however you are correct in that the North American membership is dominant.
I think language converters can often lose a lot ( I know many of the pages I've had converted came out nearly useless), and especially since discussion forums are loaded with improper spelling and slang in the first place, you probably wouldn't be able to make out much of it at all.

Yep us 'overseas' lot are in a minority, but we are here lurking around.

Interesting how "much" you see when you're only on the site for a month :P ;)

It says never because the classifieds were purged every month and there is never really much European ads in there anyways..There are still quite a few people on from all over the world here..;)

Beethoven, your statement that many Europeans live in smaller homes (than who?) may well be true in much the same way that most Canadians are perceived by some Europeans to live in the arctic, and that they crawl into their igloos each night armed to the teeth, in order to protect themselves against marauding polar bears and other assorted killing machines.

Maybe they have seen too many travelogues featuring Edmonton!

Most of the people I know in Europe (relatives for instance) live in homes which compare favourably in size to the average Canadian home; in fact having travelled extensively around Edmonton in my years with Imp----l Oil, I have seen some pretty cute but very tiny abodes in the metro Edmonton area, which would rival even the tiniest of homes anywhere in Europe or beyond.

Perhaps then there are other reasons why reptile enthusiasts from outside Canada do not subscribe in greater numbers to this web site.

We have often been guilty in the past of attempting to make interlopers such as our American cousins feel very uncomfortable for having had the nerve to infiltrate our 'for Canadians Only' web site, and just the fact that 'Europeans' are geographicaly remote from N.America may also play a small part in their lack of active participation.

The automatic translating device is however a good idea, but which of the many European languages shall we include or exclude; and what about the rest of the World? Can't we include them as well?

We would also need to adhere to a better or more correct use of the English language for this system to work effectively.

Our translating machine could overheat, resulting in seizure, causing our beloved web site to grind to a rapid and painful stop, as it wrestles to translate 'Gobbledygook' into Flemish or Finnish.

Just a few thoughts.

Hope you can see the funny side of this thread, and I hope no one gets too offended, especially the Edmontonians.

I really do like Edmonton. Honest.

Not too sure who this was directed to, and no clue what you are talking about. Only in America what? :D

Speaking as a European (Englishman born and bred), i can say that on occaision i have noticed a certain amount of the above...sometimes us non-Canadians can indeed be made to feel a little unwelcome.

Personally i think the site is just about the best English language snake/reptile forum i have found...it (IMO) beats any of the UK ones with the sheer volume of good information available.

As to the original poster saying "they have very small homes"...i hadn't actually noticed until it was quoted.

But it made me smile.

Tell me...have you ever seen Buckingham Palace.:D

Or perhaps Versailles, I hear it is a rather modest cottage. And yes, JonD, that comment was rather peculiar. Perhaps it is an inside joke... so inside that no one understands it.
