THat's it? I thought they were a little bigger. I just bought my first baby girl this month, she is only about a month and a half and has a killer appetite. She came home April 17 and ate 3 times for me with a gusto, she is now in shed. :) What a sweetie she is too. Her name is Briana. It means Strong in Irish. ;)

That is actually a fairly large snake, but they DO have the potential to get much bigger.

3 times in 10 days seems like a bit much..

Not really, she eats every 5 days. We are the 27th today and she ate the day she came home as she was due to eat. Normally I will let them settle first but she was not fased at all and accepted the food right away.
Every 5-7 days is normal for a neonate. She is only 1 1/2 months. As she gets older she will cut down to every 7-10 days. And I have only fed her small fuzzy rats, she can handle hoppers, I was just waiting for them to come in. ;)

Maybe my math is wrong, but the 17th to the 27th is only 10 days so that would be 3 feedings in 10 days. If she was being fed every 5 days she would only be on her second feeding today. 3 times in 10 days is definatly too much.

And the snake in that pic is probably about 8ft so that is an accurate idea of how big a boa will get. They can get bigger, but not likely unless its a big female.

Yes, you are right that is 10 days. But she ate on the 17th, the 22nd and today. That is 3 feedings every 5 days. ANd being that she only ate a rat 1/2 the size she could actually handle I think she is fine, I am not ever going to breed her and I don't want an over weight over grown boa so I'm not trying to power feed her if that is what you are thinking.
This is the actual size of prey she ate in all those feedings.

It's all I had at the time. breeder said she was eating small hoppers. this is a rat pup maybe a week old, just getting the fuz.

Its all depends on the snake. Most of the time they darken with age, but my female actually seems to be getting lighter as she gets older. She is just about 2 years old and just broke the 6ft mark about a month ago.

HetForHuman,
Nice looking girl! :)

Agreed. I typically only feed my babies every ten days or so. I consider a consistent schedule of every 5 days a little excessive, unless there is special reason, such as an underweight snake, etc. Adults are fed no more than twice a month.

Over 20 years if taken care of properly.

Thanks Linds. I was told by someone else that babies should be fed every 5-7 days but no more than 7. It was actually here on ssnakess somewhere. And I asked this question before I got my first baby because I couldn't find it in any care sheets.
Sometimes I think the problem is that everyone does it there own way and wants everyone else to as well.

I will cut her down to every 7-10 days but I know it didn't hurt her that much as it was only about 1/2 the size her prev. owner was feeding her. I actually never thought to ask him how often he feeds but he did tell me she was due to eat when I took her home.

just curios What do you feed an 8 foot boa, rabbits or Rats and how many times a month do you feed it?

HetForHuman

I feed the one in my photo one 2-3 pound rabbit every 14 days.

and tha doesnt get expensive after a while im just curios i might just get a boa. Also how much does a striped boa go for?.

HetForHuman
04-29-05, 08:11 PM
Nope it doesnt really get that expensive, but i guess what you think is expensive and what i think may be two different things.

I have a rabbit breeder 20 minutes from my house, and i get them at a very good price.

Also it depends if you get a proven line of striped boas, which would be genetic, or a boa that has a stripe from say just temperature fluxuations.

Also how much are you looking to spend?

There is alot of good boa breeders in the states, and you should'nt have too much trouble finding what you want.

You can feed it whatever you want :p IMHO it isn't overly important to have a certain size...they certainly don't go around in the wild feeding exclusively on prey 'sliightly larger than their girth'. All my boas get a range of sized meals... for instance my 7.5' boa has been fed everything from 5lb rabbits to 2 jumbo rats to a single medium rat per meal. Generally all my adults and subadults get fed twice per month... sometimes the meal is large, sometimes, small, sometimes in between... I breed my own so it's whatever I have available at the moment :)
