I'm having the same problem, hoping that some of the veterans will shed some light on their techniques.

I've been in the woods behind the house a couple of times and haven't seen anything either. Last summer there were a couple of black rat snakes hanging around for a month and a half. I actually had to move the largest one twice to cut the grass. One even spent several weeks on my back porch behind the hot tub. Yesterday I was cutting the grass and around 12:00 I looked and an 18-24" black rat snake was sunning in the driveway. I tried to get down to it but before I could stop the riding mower and get off it wiggled back into some ground cedar next to the front porch. When I lifted some up and looked where he went, there was a shed skin. So I'm guessing he's been around for awhile. Now I'm wondering if they are nesting under the front or back porch.

Hey you guys, Have any of you ever tried a junk yard thats out along city limits. I went to one a couple years back and was finding the biggest garters that I have ever found. Jeff

do you mean gater snakes atblover?
just curious because many people say gardener snakes because they are found in back yards (gardens).
Common misconception

There is a marsh about 1/2 a mile down the road from me. My son and I look for snakes there. 99% of the time we find some while walking through the grass. :)

I tried the bush down the road, about 2 acres in size. Found nothing.

i havnt gone looking for snakes yet but i plan to soon. i did alot of looking about a year ago but didnt find much. iv heard looking in the woods while its kind of wet out is a good time youll find snakes hiding under logs, does any one know if thats true? also will you find more snakes when its early and just warming up, id imagine they would start coming out to get warm.? i was thinking about puting some boards and things near woods, iv seen people do that on tv because snakes love to hide under things like that and thats an easy way to find them. i imagine ill be finding alot of garters too, oh well, a snake is a snake, there all awesome.
