i gotta black racer from a friend whos had it since it was a baby, he was gonna let it go but its been in captivity all its life and doesnt know how to fend for itself anymore so i took it and i need to know how to house the darn thing

Don't know just how big it is.. How was your friend housing it? It may feel comfortable as he was keeping it. They can get stressed with the change, and sometimes bigger is not necessarily better for them--to an extent. If the cage is too big they tend to feel "free" and bang against the sides and sometimes end up refusing food. I have had wc snakes do this. Actually calmed down in a smaller enclosure and began feeding again.
That said, most adult racers could be housed I think in a 30 gal long aquarium or equivalent. Large water bowl. Plenty of hide space provided and a climb as well. Away from too much commotion, I'd think.
