Hi All

I just found a snake in the house, and although I'm not really a snake lover, I would like to know if anyone can help me identify it. It is very small, perhaps only 12" long with light grey scales and an orange belly. It also has an orange ring just behind it's really small head. This might be bad, but i put it in a jar, or rather placed the jar overtop of it, so that my boyfriend can see it when he gets home. Any ideas as to what kind it is? Thanks
Heather

I'm not good at ID'ing snakes but providing your location will make it alot easier for anyone to help you ID it.

oh yeah, i guess i forgot about that. i'm in oakville, ontario. there is a large ravine at the back of the house, and 14 mile creek runs through the bottom of it, if that makes any difference whatsoever

Would it be a ringneck?

Sounds to me like a northern ringneck. I'm not 100% sure of the species, but definitely a ringneck.

nope, not a ringneck, at least not the ones i looked up after you suggested it. it is differently coloured. the orange is almost copper coloured

If you found it in Oakville and it is 12" long with grey dorsal scales, an orange belly and a ring around its neck, then yes, it is a Ringneck Snake.
Let it go where you found it.

Edit: Didn't mean to suggest that you let it go in your house - somewhere outside but close-by is ideal.

yeah i just found a good picture and description of it, and it is most definately a northern ringneck snake. (the first few pictures i saw weren't like it, so i assumed it was different.) i found it in the house, so i'm not gonna let it go in the living room, but rest assured, i will let it outside, or rather, my boyfriend will when he gets home. thanks for all your help!

They're not exactly common but they are locally abundant where they do occur.

Just wanted to say, dont worry about the little guy, he eats bugs, and is more concerned with getting away than biting, these guys are really neat, good to hear you didnt kill the little guy.

Sounds like a ringneck or a red belly, if its's body is shaped like a milk snakes body then it is a ring neck if it is more like a garter snake body type then it is a red belly, both are very difficult to get to eat in captivity so you probably want to just let it go.

And actually, they don't eat bugs. Few snakes do. Ringnecks predominantly eat small salamanders such as redbacks, as well as worms, likely slugs, and supposedly other baby snakes.
