View Full Version : Food bump (photos?)
Before I explain why I'm asking, can someone post an example of what a food bump should look like?
Thanks in advance. :p

what kind of snake is that?
DP, but I liked the bottom one better...
Spirit, it should look like a noticeable bump, caused by food. There really is no easier way to explain it.
Craig, always the smart a$$... LOL
When my ball eats, the bump is big enough that he no longer fits through the hole of one of his hides (but fits with tons of room to spare on an empty stomach), but the bump is almost gone by the next day, and by the 2nd day, he's out searching for more (I'm assuming that's what he's doing). And no, he doesn't cruise all the time.
He struggles a TINY bit to get the food down, so I know they're not too small... He was underfed before and is just now putting on the weight. Eating 1 pup every 5 days (and not during shed week). I have no plans to up the meals, but I'm still not 100% accustomed to what that bump should look like.
It's so obvious in corns. lol
Thanks, guys... any pics are still appreciated though.
Spirit, don't be too concerned with your ball pythons' bump. You should be happy that he's eating and with such enthusiasm. I'll be honest, recently and from now on, I don't see a bump in my balls even right after they've eaten. I've gone to the "small meals more often" side and plan on staying there. No bump = faster digestion = eating more often with less work on the digestive system.

Just outta curiosity, mykee, what's a small meal more often? I've been wanting to take that approach, but I've heard conflicting reports about how it is on the digestive system.
I'll feed a 1000g snake a 70-80g rat every 5-7 days. A 2000g snake will get a 100g rat every 5-7 days. a 3000g snake will get a 150g-ish rat once a week or so. Small meals more often (at least in my experience) means quicker digestion time, faster turnaround for next feeding, less stress on the snake. That's a fact. No conflicting reports here.
Don't believe me? Buy 6 large chicken breasts and cook them up for consumption. Would you rather eat all of those breasts at one meal, or spread them out throughout the day? Simple answer, right? Same with the snakes.

There is no way you can compare human consumption/digestion with a snakes consumption and digestion. It doesn't make sense in anyway to draw a comparison like that.

I'd eat them all at once. But... I eat alot of chicken!
But I like your point. I think I will research this method, I have a couple trouble feeders right now.:(
Mykee: When my ball eats, he is no longer able to fit through the door to one of his hides (when he has LOTS of room to fit through on an empty stomach)... LOL I'm not worried about the bump at all. I was just curious how big too big IS, I guess... I'm still adjusting from feeding the corn.
I knew if I said anything though, no one would post pics... *sigh* LOL Y'all suck. :D

Now that's the pot calling the kettle black, if I've ever heard it! :D
Spirit: If you are worried that it is too big, only feed rats that are equal to the snakes girth (in the widest spot). They can take 1 1/2 times they're girth, but to ease your mind, just feed the same girth.
Hump.
PS. It's a scrub python in the pic.
Nita; the basic idea was conveyed sufficiently enough.
Spirit; a meal that is too big, is a meal that remains in the floor of the enclosure 'cause the snake won't (read: can't) eat it.
What is it about this place and going off topic and trying to advise, while avoiding the initial question? See first post. lol
And for the record, this thread has nothing to do with MY snake, or the meals he eats. Does anyone have a picture, or not? It's like dentistry with some of you. lol
I dont' think many people take pics right after eating, don't want to stress them out, but you've gotten lots of answers as to what appears normal.

I have... thanks.
I'll look elsewhere for a visual example (I need a few different pictures), and just take a picture of mine at his next feeding to use as well.
:)
Edit: If anyone also has a picture of an underweight snake (where you can see the spine) as well as overweight, that would also be appreciated.

That's a surefire way to get no positive responses.
why were you worried about YOUR snakes meals being to big if it doesn't have anything to do with YOUR snake!?!
If you just wanted a picture of a snake that had just eaten, why didn't you just take a picture of your own in the first place.
I gotta go brush my teeth, I think I feel a cavity coming on.
Because I asked for pics, not advice? I don't understand why that's so difficult to comprehend. I'm not worried about my snake at ALL. Just need pics (pref lots of them) for someone else.
It's all good, Hump! Simmah down now... ;)
Edit: Oh you know, it's JUST not worth it. *deleted* :grab:
