My weird cham...

My panther chameleon, Elwood, has taken to eating leaves on occasion. This would be normal but he's actually eating dead, dry leaves off the bottom of the cage, they crunch as he eats them. Very weird. Anyone else's cham do this?

Although it may seem a little strange, its perfectly normal Panther cham behavior. As a matter of fact, the occasional unusual item (as long as its safe of course) will only aid them in the balance of a varied diet. For example, I've offered pinkie mice on many occasions to females who need the extra reserves and protein for breeding.

One thing you didn't mention though…is the species of plant in the cage.

My male veiled eats dead and alive Ficus leaves. The female will only eat live ones though.

The leaves are dead ficus leaves, so they're safe. But it seems weird that he doesn't want nice fresh leaves.

The first few times i saw him do it, I opened the cage quick and took the leaf out of his mouth. He kind of spat it out when I touched the end of the leaf. I'm lucky he's such an amiable chameleon :D

my veiled does the same. I was worried he would get sick when he ate a blackened pothos leaf that was loose on the soil, but he was never affected by it. but he a is always trying to eat leaves, even a picture of a leaf.

Ficus leaves are fine, so are pothos, u can try offering some greens to see if he will accept them.

lol i think it is hillariouse. They look so funny sitting there crunching on a dead leaf.
But ya kind of freaked me out the first time I saw it as well. But then I started lauphing the look on her face was priceless.

yeah the look mine gave me when I offered a spinach leaf, he grabbed it so fast and then I was worried he would choke cuz he was taking it all in at once so I tried to take it back from him and he spit it out at me. now i break it into little pieces for him but he loves it.
