Alright .. Me and Trace, (the lizard lady) were having a discussion on ovulation (yes were losers) ..

Anyway .. this is aimed at my monitors but as well to any boids and other reptiles..

When the female cycles, obviously she lets out certain hormones that entices the male to breed to her .. now the male breeds and a week after the female ovulates .. (thats my scenario)

My queston is this .. Did the ovulation come because she was bred too or was she gonna ovulate wether or not a male is present <--- I think this is the case.. B4 the female ovulates does she let out hormones? ( I think she does but I am asking cause i am not sure)

Ovulation means the production of eggs, wether fertile or not right? I feel silly asking all these questions but I am comparing my reptiles to the human reproductive biology and don't know if this is accurate or not.

So basically if my female is ovulating right now it means she will defenetly produce eggs the question is wether they will be fertile or not? Is this correct?

Sorry for all the question but I need the info ..

Tx in advance for the response ..

Dom

Are you sure about that? Is ovulation the production of eggs (what you said) or is it the movement of eggs from one place to another place within the female's body cavity? There's a lot of definitions for ovulation these days, and I'm not sure which one is correct or useful for our purposes.

Hey Dom,

That is a lot of questions, and I surely don't have all the answers, but I may be able to offer some insight.

Ovulation is the only time in which the ovum has to be fertilized by a male. It is believed that females do produce eccessive amounts of faramones during ovulation and that it is one of the elements that intice males to mate. In my experience, it's not the males urge to mate that is the problem, it's getting the females to cycle that can be more difficult (though much easier with experience).

Females won't just ovulate on a regular cycle just for the heck of it. They wait for certain conditions to be met and at that point realize that conditions are at a prime for reproduction. Things like adequate food, temps, (and a whole lot of other things I don't understand ;))

After ovulation and fertilization, nesting is the next part of the game (dare I say the fun part?). This can be the hardest part of the whole procedure. Just because a female lays fertile eggs, it doesn't mean they are good. It's providing her with what she wants to be able to lay them at the appropriate time, and providing usable nesting substrate/humidity/temps, and a whole lot more.

At most any point during the procedure the female can re-absorb the eggs as well if she feels conditions aren't adequate.

A lot of this is likely more than you were asking, but it sort of all relates to each other.

Keep in mind that anything I have said in this little blurb is pertaining only to monitors and based on my experiences and thoughts, as well as insight from others.

Best wishes :D
