Well some bulbs arent suitable for lizards. There are some red lights that are used to keep fries and other things warm, they can damage your lizards' skin. I've spoken to someone who gave his iguana a major skin problem which he thought was caused by the non-reptile bulb... I wonder what the rest of the forum suggests, as for me i propose you put a reptile bulb on instead...

Maybe it's the colour they used to make the bulb red.

I'm with Bob on this one, it might be damaging for your lizards. Better safe than sorry!

not damaging at all... its just the lamp warming up..it happes every time no matter what bulb you put in.. these bulbs are not a problem either.. in fact there almost the same as the zoo med ones.. ive been useing them for over a year now without a problem. and ive head alot of ppl on here suggest useing thoes bulbs..

thoes lights your useing are called party lights right.. come in green blue red ect. ect. its just like useing a regular bulb.. not a bid deal..

What type of reptile are you keeping and in what size tank is it in? Just a piece of advice, if you love reptiles don't buy a regular bulb just to save money, you might regret it later. have a nice one!!!!!!!!!:p

the biggest difference between regular bulbs and reptile bulbs of the same general type is the name on the box.. no worries about damaging your reptiles with these at all...I have noticed that smell aswell on occasion with new bulbs and i have found it to be just dust burning off.. if i wipe my bulbs off first i don't get that smell..Also these are the only type of bulbs i use (regular or spot lights and colored party lights for night viewing...

They are no different except for the price and name on it. The spectrum is no different than the high priced reptile bulbs, and they both have the same smell at first. I used to use them both all the time before switching over to rubbermaids and heat pads, with no problems ever. But I guess I don't love reptiles though, eh Burmese Maniac?

i use the red lights for my geckos and plated lizards....its not for main heat just to add a lil extra
the heat lamp that came with my plated lizards was way too hot so i put this regular red bulb in and it keeps it at a lower temp
the smell is less today
ty for all the advice
