I was making my rounds feeding the critters and set the bowl on the argus cage. I fed the argus first, (it is only about 18 inches tl)
then went to feed the blackthroat some thawed rat fuzzies.
Well, the little argus climbed out and grabbed one of the little rats and jumped back in its cage.
The rat fuzzy was way to big to swallow, so the little argus went on to show me what them pointy things on his toes are really good for.
This is the first time I watched a monitor shred food into bite size pieces. If I wasn't so keyed into watching this maybe I would have thought to take some pics.
Just wanted to share this and use it to show that you can't feed a monitor food that is too big for it to eat.

I was think about giving my savannah something big, but how messy is it?

It wasn't really that messy. No blood flow from a thawed rat.
It looked nasty while he shredded it.
There wasn't anything left to clean up. Argus leave no leftovers. Hahaha

I use dirt, like I said he ate it all including some dirt.
If you are worried about the mess, feed it in a large rubbermaid.

Scott, I left the argus enclosure door open last week while cleaning my albigs. The argus (about 25 inches TL) Saw the albig and tripoded, then lunged!!!! it bounced off the glass on the other side luckily, or it woulda been dinner for my 5 foot + albigs! talk about territorial!

Gutsy little things arent they??
