Exorcist 1, the very first....more because I was about 11-12 and watched it alone on Halloween night. So far nothing compares or just doesn' t affect me in this genre of movies. :D

Yummy...I love the exorcist, such punctuality in its deliverance of horrid macabre wonders. Im a sick twisted sadistic little maggot pie....Heeheeheehee. What i loved about that movie was its fear striking qualities. That movie really spun my head no pun intended.
Exorcist three had me wailing in tears...the movie was like a common dollar theater sellout...so horribly terrible it made my blood curdle and my flesh rub raw with disgust.
:)
I love ghost movies!
Poltergist(not really scarey but very entertaining)
exorsist
the grudge
the entity(especially scarey)
sixth sense
stir of ecoes

He ask about Modern movies. For originality a lot of the Japanese films have some great original ideas. Saw was great.
Julie rented little black book. That was HORRIFIC!
I think Dark Water is going to blow all the new films away it looks like it has a serious creep factor going on.
saw was great, but it wasnt really a horror it was more of a thriller film then horror

We have the original Japanese version of Ju-on (The Grudge). It is absolutely the scariest movie I've seen.
If you like gore, Dead Alive is a hell of a lot of fun to watch.
And I have to disagree about Exorcist 3 - I thought it was excellent. Especially considering how little violence is shown onscreen. I watched Exorcist 4 recently, though, and thought it was crap.

I would have to say the Grudge for the modern horrors. But, I still think the classics are the best!
The Changeling
The Omen
The Exorcist
Black Sunday
Amityville Horror
The Entity
I am a huge horror fan - I could go on and on..............

well, it isn't really all that modern, nor is it really all that scary - but i would have to say Evil Dead 2. bruce campbell was hardcore in that one.
Favorite recent horror is The Ring, I liked The Grudge but thought The Ring was better. Still havent' managed to get a hold of the Japanese originals for either but intend to.
As for classic scared me the most.........I still have never seen all of the Excorsist, the first one. I used to watch every scary movie ever and when that one came out I watched it from under a pillow!! LOL, I haven't gotten around to actually watching it since!!
I know it may not be a true horror film but I have to go with Saw on this one, first horror/suspense/thriller that I've enjoyed in a long long time.
Exorcist will always be right at the top of my list of all time favourites though along with another horror/thriller type Silence of the Lambs.
Sorry a list of others that I liked
Wrong Turn, Thirteen Ghosts, Ghost Ship (the opening scene makes it all worthwhile), Sixth Sense, New Nightmare, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the new one, never saw the old one).
I prefer Horror scary to Horror Gory. A good horror will scare you $hitle$$ without having a bunch of blood and guts for gross factor.
There are way more but it is late and I'm tired!! LOL

The opening scene of Ghost Ship was great.
As for me, Japanese horrors like Ringu, the Grudge, and the Eye are some of the scariest for me... but then again I'm afraid of the dark, so most horror movies make me double check my locks.
Thirteen Ghosts and House on Haunted Hill were surprisingly scary with the visuals, but getting to see James Marsters in a teeny film roll was worth it :p
Gothica was great too. Movies about mental hospitals and zombies (28 Days Later) are the also some that I find scary... don't like those zombies.
HumphreyBoagart
03-13-05, 02:01 AM
Yeah 28 days later was some good shhtuff, I'm not a huge fan of the gory ones either, they usually add some comedy to it all though, but I just don't find it scary. Way too unrealistic to be scary. The Ring was good. Cabin fever was cheezy, but I liked it.
Too late and too drunk to think of any others, I'll let you know in the morning! LOL!

Oh I forgot about Gothika I was surprized at how good that movie was. I don't care what anybody says i liked white noise also. I hope Ring 2 doesn't disappoint.
I thought the Ring was great, best one I've seen in a long time.
I finally got up the courage to watch Ju-on but it disappointed me. With all the hype I thought the movie was gonna scare me into a mental institution but in the end the last scene from The Blair Witch Project was scarier. I don't know about you guys but seeing the guy standing in the corner is one scene I don't think I'll ever forget; I'm getting goose bumps thinking about it while I type.......next house I get built won't have any corners...lol.

Night of the living dead scared me when i was a kid.
Also Pet sematary, for some reason.
Today, anything from the mind of Clive Barker is good for me. The guy is unique, he doesn't follow the usual horror clichets (ghosts, vampires, etc) but creates a fantasy universe of it's own, wich becomes the basis for his stories.
Skinnychondro
03-13-05, 08:49 AM
I really liked The Blair Witch Project. The fact that you never saw anything and hearing those creepy baby crying noises at night made it totally scary. Try watching that for the first time then going camping in the middle of Algonquin park the next day. You will never walk alone in the woods again. hehe

28 Days Later. Scariest movies- anything with Jennifer Lopez:)
a movie called phantasm scared me the most.
Damn I forgot about white noise.....I'm def. more into the ones that mess with your mind over the pure visual gory movies. I also liked Blair Witch, I remember the hype it produced when it came out. Everyone I saw it with came out saying it wasn't as good as they thought it would be but judging by the fingernail marks my buddy and I had in our arms from our girlfriends I think it was just a little scary.
My little pony! shudder  , lol
Other than that would have to say the ring or 28 days later.

I'm not surprised nobody has mentioned this one yet, it's not a well known film.. but PUMPKINHEAD was absolutely the best horror movie of all time, bar none. It sounds like a lame title, but if you see it, rent it. You will not be disappointed. The effects were great, the story was BRILLIANT, the cinematography was absolutely perfect, and the end has you going "AAAAAAAHH! I didn't see that coming!" Oh, and it has Lance Henrikson in it. He's a phenomenal actor.
I thought The Ring sucked, but that last 10 minutes almost made me poop myself. So I'll say it was "ok".
And I don't care what anyone said about it, I thought the conceptual horror or the Blair Witch Project was bone chilling. Especially because I watched it at a drive-in. Talk about authenticity.....
RON - You know what else people didn't notice about the Blair Witch? When Heather found Mike's teeth and his toungue wrapped up in his own jacket... then he started yelling for them. How could he have done that with no teeth or tongue? Scaaaaaaaary.
Others I loved:
The Grudge
The Exorcist
Gothika
The First Power (from the late 80s - Lou Diamond Phillips. Great film!)
Witchboard
What Lies Beneath (That movie genuinely scared the crap outta me)
Stir of Echoes
The list goes on and on and on... but trust me on Pumpkinhead.
The ring has been the best one in a LONG time
I know they've remade Amityville Horror, hopefully they don't ruin it because I watched it @ my buddies cottage , ooo ee spooky!
The shining, excorsit and believe it or not, JAWS scared the living hell out of me when I was younger
HeatherRose

What Lies Beneath, I found really good too.
I can't believe I forgot Halloween... I found it really creepy.
I also agree on Jaws, and I have to bring up The Duel because it was the first scary Spielberg movie I saw.
I am NOT a horror fan of any kind. I actually laughed and got up at most of the movies you guys mentioned. I try to "give myself to the movie" and just get into it, each and every time. But I simply cannot make myself do anything but laugh. I dunno. Some people aren't horror fans I guess :D :D
But I must say Gothika was simply amazing. It was a neat story, very original and had me watching every minute. I loved it. Halle Barry was amazing in the movie and I never expected the "twists" in the story.
Marisa
Stir of Echoes was great! Haven't seen that one mentioned in a long time.
I loved 28 days later, Dawn of the dead (the remake) the original night of the living dead.. Texas Chainsaw Massacre... Seven... Halloween for sure, micheal meyers was great..
Skinnychondro

Duel was a great film, I love those scary movies from the 70's...
Did anyone see House of 1000 corpses, the Rob Zombie film???...that movie was psycho...
house of 1000 corpses was crazy, pretty rediculous but one of the more gory movies for sure..
Beyond Boarders, Notebook, Bring it On... were the scariest movies I ever watched....aaaauugh.gggrrraaeeeeeaaaa..barffff
Blair Witch scared me sheeetless! At the time I saw it I was living with my boyfriend in his cabin in the woods. DAMN--that movie scared me.
The ending of the Ring was chilling.
REFUSE to watch The Exorcist. I'm a wimp. ;)
Have to see Pumpkinhead--don't think I've ever heard of it--thanks Invictus.

Gotta love the old black and white horror movies. I like movies that actually "scare" you and not actually make you nocious, like with heads flying in every direction.
Favorates:
The Bad Seed
The orginal House on Haunted Hill(Gotta love Vincent Price! His voice itself is creepy, lol)
Exorcist
Magority of Steven Kings books that became movies
Tyler99
03-13-05, 03:23 PM
Oh, I also like house on the haunted hill and 13 ghosts.
I havent seen house on the haunted hill in awhile and the only part I rememeber is when the photagraph girl with the camera gets dragged up the wall and blood stains are all over the place.
Tim and Julie B
03-13-05, 03:52 PM
I had forgotten about Stir of Echos I will have to knock the dust off my VHS's tonight...........lol
Invictus I still remember that creepy movie poster for Pumpkinhead when I was a kid just that kind of freaked me out.
It might not be a Horror more of a Thriller but I really liked the First Scream. I think the knife weilding psyhcopaths freak me out more then the supernatural movies though.

I havent seen house on the haunted hill in awhile and the only part I rememeber is when the photagraph girl with the camera gets dragged up the wall and blood stains are all over the place. If you like the remix Tyler, you might like the orginal House on Haunted Hill with Vincent Price being the host. It is what inspired the modern version of the movie. Although the special effects in the old black and white version are cheesy to us now, but it is still kinda creepy if you look past the speciel effects.
house of 1000 corpses was crazy, pretty rediculous but one of the more gory movies for sure.. Zombie did a horriable job with that movie. The song was better, lol. I agree it was too gory and I thoght I was gonna caugh up a lung. It was really gross. Never finished the movie. The plot seemed stupid to. Hands way down. :D

House of a 1000 corpses rocked!!!
Saw
The Mothman Prophecies
has anyone seen the movie "session 9" it was pretty scary
Ghostship I forgot about that one.
What about The Shinning
When I was little I know "Nightmare on Elm street" was pretty scary, and "sleep away camp".. scared the crap out of me... lol
Oh ya and anyone seen "The Forgotten" really good movie... not a really scary movie, but weird!
The Shining was amazing!! Man how could I forget that!! I love Stephen King but I prefer the books to the movies.
Pumpkinhead was fantastic, I loved that movie. House of 1000 corpes was dumb, it was just done for gore factor and was a complete waste of time IMO, I think their plan was to see if they could make you puke. Dream catcher was a good one, House on Haunted hill is a great movie, if you like haunted house movies though the best is SK's Rose Red, OMG!!! Amazing movie, the best SK movie ever!!

I would have to vote for The Amityville Horror. That movie gave me nightmares for a long time (actually I still cry myself to sleep and rely on my Greyhound "Ray" to watch my back while i am in the basement alone).
Also the first couple Nightmare on Elm Streets, just something about a guy getting you from the dreamworld.
Umm oh another classic for me is The Burning
**Edit- Hmm no one mentioned Chucky, the Goonies OR Gremlins..........all very scary  My wife..........The Dragon Lady is afraid of the Telebubies :D **

Oh another good movie was Phantoms. It was based on a Dean Koontz book that was a good flick....but as usual the book was better. I wish they would make Intensity into a movie..they did make a TV movie a long time ago but I want to see a big budget one. That is a freekin weird, scary serial killer book.

I forgot bout Wes Craven's movies..Those are always wacked, lol. But definately boggles the mind. I think his newer movie is "They". Was that a wierd one...

Good input guys, keep it coming. Truly I am old school. As I haven't been actually scared by a movie since I was 8, the psychologocial stuff doesn't do any thing for me. I watched The Ring and Blair Wich and was bored silly. I enjoyed the slasher flicks back in Junior high. Perhaps because they at least had something running around hacking people up to entertain me. Perhaps that's why I like the Classics best, better writing, and stories (or just a good laugh with no pretense in some of the B-movies). I think my lineup of the modern era are American Werewolf in London, The Haunting, Exorcist and Night of the Living Dead. But I guess nowdays they're not really modern either. And that is why I ask for your input.

Wow, everybody's come up with a ton of movies I didn't think of.
I definitely second Invictus on Witchboard - one of the scariest movies ever. I watched Blair Witch alone, and it was the only movie that had made me lose sleep since I was a kid.
Anyways, I'm about to watch Van Helsing - and am assuming it's not going to keep me on the edge of my seat. But, speaking of vampire flicks, anybody see the Hunger? That was probably the only vamp movie that ever really creeped me out - and wasn't totally cheezy. Anybody suggest any others?
I definitely prefer scarey, creepy, freaky over gore.

I agree completely. Japanese suspense-horror are very stressing. They are based on the things you don't see and not on makup like American horror movies
Phantoms was a great movie, gets you scared in the first 5 minutes!! Dean Koontz is a favorite author of mine too, Koontz, Saul, King and of course the master of sick twisted horror Clive Barker! If you like Barker and havent' read Coldheart Canyon, get it.

I don't really know about it being scarey, but for a Vampire flick I thought Underworld was pretty wicked!! Modern day Vampire & Warewolf flick.
Underworld kicked butt!! Not scary at all but great movie, can't wait for #2 to come out.

The first horror movie I ever saw was C.H.U.D. - Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. LOL.. anyone remember that cinematic stinkburger? Scared the piss out of me when I was 8 years old mind you.... I didn't walk near manhole covers until I was 12.

Oh, I forgot about Prince of Darkness. I'm not sure why, but the whole "dream" thing throughout the movie totally creeped me out. And it had Alice Cooper as a bonus creep.
Also I guess more of a "suspense" movie that I like is The Hitcher. One of Rutger Hauer's best roles. Too bad he did so many crap movies instead of good ones like that.

Anyone see The Stuff?
I'm also a big fan of Pumpkinhead, although it was cheese to the max -- Cabin Fever was just plain awful (why put the Boy Meets World guy in it, too, laugh?)
The Hills Have Eyes is a classic, too
Most of the new scary movies coming out arent very scary, the classics are better. The Halloween series is probably the best old scary movie..but recent ones would defintely be wrong turn, texas chainsaw massacre remake(better then the old one), and dawn of the dead was awesome. Ghost ship was really good, im hoping they are working on a second one! anyone hear about it lately?
Tim and Julie B
03-17-05, 03:22 PM
C.H.U.D. LMAO that movie was the cheesiest! A Cheesy classic that I really loved was PIGS.........."If you go out in the woods tonight your in for a PIG surprize..." OMG Cheese!
Another good Japanese film is something or other.....translated it's Island of the dead. Good flick spooky kind of scary but a good movie.
Too many of the modern movies are crappy - Saw had terrible acting that i couldn't get over.
The Grudge was pretty good....
That "Bogeyman" movie looks pretty good...
But like many others - the classics are the best, I love Lucio Fulci movies
-"The Beyond" aka "The Seven Gates of Hell"
-"Zombie"
-"The House by the Cemetary"
Mario Bava Movies like "The Mask Of Satan"
Of course, George Romero
-"Night of the lIving Dead"
- "Martin"
-"The Crazies"
"Die, Monster Die!"
But I Absolutely love the original "The Haunting" - that freaked the heck out of me!
