View Full Version : we are the GIANT SNAKE people
JimmyDavid

I see that some people are in this website
because they love geckos, others are more into rat snakes and milk snakes. Some others are into crocs while others into boas. We all have a preference...
So who belongs in the GIANT SNAKE tribe? raise you hand, if you are one of us.
(you can also tell what you keep or what's in your "next to get" list)
I'm deffinatly one :) but I have a certain addiction know as Afrockitis it's a terrible affliction where I can't control my buying of Afrocks.

Yeah and all Lakeridgekennel's reptiles are big(well the ones in his sig).
I love 'em, but cant really keep 'em. I want to get a pair of papuan pythons as they are the biggest snakes I can get here(females 10-14').

I really like Giant snakes, but after cutting back on the collection the only giants we have right now are the albino burms, a female tiger retic and a normal male retic. Elvira and the Tiger are quite big.

Yes, your right scrubs should be included on the giant list.
And for the record I would like to pass the credit for them, Pandora, the female green anaconda (and I guess the male too) and two of the Afrocks to you guys. They are fantastic animals for certain, Thanks again.

For me, it's all about Retics. Once my 3 from Mike Wilbanks arrive, I'll be at 6. The hard part is deciding what to order next. I'm thinking either more albinos or some dwarfs. I really like the genetic stripes.
I love giants and that's our main focus here. We keep Afrocks and Burms. I'll have to figure out what I want to do with Burms though, besides attempting the Bateater cross. I like Granits alot, but I'm just not sure where to go. Maybe if some of these mysterious Burm morphs prove out...
Either way, our main focus is Retic morphs.

Why do people lie about anything???? There are many motives to why people lie..... I am guessing that this persons particular motive is to impress people...... Who knows.... I just call BS when I see it...... Do you honestly think he keeps all of these huge reptiles in his bedroom or basement???? How much do you think it cost a week to feed these animals???? I am sure it is way beyond a 16 year olds budget..... I could be wrong but I doubt it....
I can't comment on anything else but I have seen pics of his Niles and the set up. It's a really good set up.

I'm 15 yearsold and i have 2 part time jobs... My collection consists of 5 snakes (all small eating rats and mice of different sizes) 2 lizards (beardie and veiled) and a few amphibians...I just make enough money to feed this small collection. I have a VERY hard time imagining someone who is 16 that needs to bring in well over 30 pounds of rabbit weekly just for his larger snakes. Either he's bluffing or his parents won the Lotto a couple of times.

And also for the record, we got all those snakes from other people too, we didn't create any of them. I'm just glad they all had a good place to go to be seen near me when we decided we had to cut back on the square footage of our public display.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people I've ran into over the years that have so much in common with me - thanks for saying hey, shoot me an email with your number or give me a call sometime!
Oh, and Gregg - i think there is something in some of the Manitoba water that causes some people to think they have what is on their "wish lists". Sold him an albino burm not knowing his age, and he posts lots of pictures of it, none of anything else.
Lakeridge - post some pictures if you have it, I'm suprised it waited till Gregg pointed it out, the rest of us have been just letting you have your teenage fun so far, and haven't brought it up as directly before.

Ahh, so the story changes again....... Ok I did mess up on the age thing..... He is 17 going to be 18...... Sorry for the mistake...... Here is a PM lakeridgekennel sent me...... All of a sudden the huge majority of these animals listed are not his but they belong to other members of the family...... I guess the green anaconda is not his but him and 5 friends need to take it out of the cage for some weird reason.....LOL...... It is so funny when you catch someone out in a lie and they try to back peddal their way out.....LOL.....
Here is the PM..... The spelling is quite funny as well....

Why people lie to impress people? I would have to say it's often a compulsion, mixed with low self-esteem, and a need for self validation. I used to work with one guy who always had a story to top the next guy. If one were to believe him he had an amazing life, really at least 5 lifetimes worth! with a career as a park warden in Africa, and a diplomat. (He was a poor electrician when I knew him) It got to the point where guys would make up stories (and some pretty ludicrous ones too) just to see how he would top them.
Mind you I don't think he even got as far as boasting 23 giant snakes, 10 caiman, 4 alligators and some other animals that aren't listed because they're not as impressive.

Man, i've missed a lot in this thread.
Kind of went on a path i didn't plan, it was supposed to be a thread to reveal "giant keepers", and it turned out...weird.
Anyway, Always nice to see Greeg around (how's it going ?), and YES, Gaboon keepers are a hardcore tribe of it's own. Takes guts...
(but notice that you can be killed by a large constrictor as well, so large pythons are not a walk in the park ;) ).

takes ~4min for a giant to stop your heart.
time it takes to fie from a gaboon bite?

I guess they are in a class all their own..... Dead is dead...... No matter how it happens the result is the same every time......
A gaboon bite can kill you pretty fast depending on the type of bite you get....... If you are bitten in a vein you can be dead pretty fast..... I suppose it can take as little as 10 minutes..... If you live through a gaboon bite, you will be missing atleast a few fingers due to the massive necrosis caused by the venom...... You may even suffer life long heart problems because of the cardiotoxins in the venom.......
Now a huge constrictor can kill you if you are dumb enough to handle one by yourself (same would be true for hot keepers)..... But there are far less deaths caused by constrictors compared to the venomous species..... The reason being is that constrictors do not use their consticting ablities as a line of defence in most cases....... But I guess there are situation where a keeper or a person walking in the bush, can be mistaken for or looked at as prey.....
Anyway, both are dangerous in their own way ( I do not think one is more dangerous than the other) and neither should be kept by minors or inexperianced people....... Both can kill you or seriously hurt you....... Both should be respected and left to experianced keepers only......
Thats my opinion......
Jimmy D, I have been good bro..... Nice to see you too.....

Hey everyone,
I might be a little too late for this but i too dont understand why people lie sometimes. Some dude (i am not going to say his name, but if anyone is curious just pm me) not too long ago told me that he had pied ball pythons and that he would sell them to me for $375ea!! I knew that was total bs from the moment he said that so i asked him why is he selling them for that low of a price? Well, his response was "i have too many, i have over 200 of them in stock"! Then i asked him if he he was sure they were pied bp's and he told me this exact quote: "Yes, i am positive i have pieds, why would i sell something i dont have"? I guess they do lie just to impress people or make friends. Not a good way to make friends IMO
As for something ON topic, the only thing that i have right now that i might consider as a "smaller giant" is my prized adult female columbian boa :) I HAD a male afrock until a friend of mine lost it :(
Thanks,
Ben

I definetly agree about the handling part. The biggest snake I've personally owned was a 8.5ft female boa. I was very careful when handling her, and I always made sure either my dad or a friend that has reptiles was within shouting distance(in the house) of me incase it decided it didnt like what I was doing. Personally, anything over 7ft....I wouldnt handle when im alone. Im 5'10", 128lbs. 15 years old.

I own a 1 and a half year old African Rock Python, her name is Fade. She is about 7 and a half feet long now. She is the first large snake i have owned. Thats all i own atm. Nice retic Jimmy. Lately I've been toying with the thought of getting a tiger retic. Is there any noticable difference in personality/temperment between a normal full sized retic and a dwarf retic?
Also, this is an open question to anyone who might be able to answer, but not too long ago i was told that green burms stay much smaller then normal burms. Is this true?
Cheers,
Justin
I'm not sure on the temperment of dwarf retics. I'll probably be ordering a pair of super dwarfs from Mike Wilbanks soon, so I'll let you know when they arrive. Tigers are great though. Like I said, I can't wait for my tiger het to arrive.

I have been keeping giants since about 1990. I have kept anacondas, retics, burms, rocks, scrubs, and red tail boas. Currently I have 2.2 burms. One I have had since 1991. They range from 14 to 17 feet. I feed mine very light. Keeps the cage clean up lighter and most think it lengthens the life span of the animals. I breed them twice. Both years I feed the girls more heavy. I let them get up to a little over 100 lbs. but usually the max at around 80 by the end of feeding season.
