Has anyone ever tried the ZooMed repti crickets for their veiled chameleons? I think my guy would actually eat them because he is so curious and bites at alot of odd looking things such as buttons on my shirt, and rough edges of my sleeve. He seems to want to taste things. But he's only about 5 months old and I am afraid to let him try much and I'm never sure about those packaged food items for reptiles.

not to change the subject, but I thought it was so cool that he came out of his cage onto my hand (without coaxing)and wasn't stressing at all. I think that is pretty good for a species that doesn't like to be handled. of course I had the container of crickets on the table so he probably just wanted closer to that. he's so awesome. :p

I have not yet seen or heard of a chameleon that will eat still insects, but you never know. It is often the bright colour and lighting off inanimate objects (such as the button on your shirt) that attracts them. It couldn't hurt to try, though. I don't know how nutritionally beneficial those would be...

As far as the handling goes, quite often they are tame and willing to interact as neonates, juveniles and sub-adults, but they DO tend to have a major attitude change as they approach adult hood. Not to spoil your fun, but just so you're aware and not disappointed should his manner change.

The dried crickets have a good amount of nutrition in them and could be fed to your chameleon. If you hand feed your chameleon chances are you will be able to trick it with the dried crickets. Even if you place all the crickets in a container at the bottom of the tank you can try placing half live and half dried, chances are he will take a few dried ones and maybe begin to eat them without other live crickets being int he contrainer.

Honestly, is it worth going through all that trouble just to get him eat dead crickets? :P As for nutrition, I was more referring to the preservatives and what not they may or may not put in there.

Definitely! Not quite to the extent of Veileds however.

I agree... i wouldn't go threw all the trouble myself.. but he seems to want to know how so i told him what i think would work best and now the decision is his! :p

It could be worthwhile if you lived somewhere where crickets were not available on a regular basis. The pet stores here run out all the time!

no doubt that live crickets are number one choice, but I was curious about the dried crickets as a back up. But I wouldn't want to wait until I needed to use them to figure out if they would be useful. Thanks to all for your input.

Oh, and as far as the button nippin, my buttons were not shiny and bright, they were a dull brown. But no fun spoiled here, I am the type to sieze the day.

those dryied snails would be a really good meal for a gravid female. If you could get her to eat them of course, lol

I think if you put it between your finger and wigle it abit you might be able to trick your cham into thinking it is alive. THey are smart but not that smart lol
